AAR Hospital appoints Dr. Aysha Edwards as CEO

KENYA — AAR Hospital has appointed Dr. Aysha Edwards as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective November 9, 2023.

Dr. Edwards, a highly qualified medical professional, brings over a decade of leadership experience and expertise in strategic planning, operational efficiency, and patient-centered care to her new role.

Dr. Edwards holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, and a Postgraduate Degree in Emergency Medicine from the University of the West Indies.

Her extensive background and leadership roles in both Kenya and abroad make her a valuable addition to AAR Hospital.

Before assuming the position of CEO, Dr. Edwards served as the Director of Clinical Services at AAR Hospital for the past three years.

In this role, she played a pivotal role in commissioning the hospital, ensuring a strong focus on patient satisfaction, operational efficiency, and the expansion of healthcare services to new regions.

Her previous experience includes working as an emergency medical doctor, acting medical service and research director, and leading the establishment of a private wing dedicated to COVID-19 patients.

Prior to her time in Kenya, Dr. Edwards served on various boards and held a senatorial position in Trinidad and Tobago for nearly three years.

The outgoing CEO, Dr. Ken Muma, has stepped down after a commendable one-and-a-half years of service, choosing to pursue other career interests.

Dr. Edwards now steps into this significant role with a clear vision for the hospital’s future and a commitment to building on the foundation laid by her predecessor.

Steve Okeyo, the Group CEO, expressed his excitement about Dr. Edwards’ appointment, highlighting that it was long overdue.

He conveyed confidence in her leadership abilities, emphasizing the positive impact she would bring to patient care and community well-being.

Okeyo also praised Dr. Edwards for her dedication to fostering a culture of excellence and engagement within the institution.

He believes that her appointment will encourage collaborative efforts among the staff, contributing to the overall success of the company and creating an environment where both employees and customers feel valued and respected.

AAR Hospital, a 140-bed general hospital with a separate outpatient facility, provides a comprehensive range of medical services.

These include theater services, critical care, diagnostics, endoscopy, medical-surgical services, emergency care, gynecology, dental services, and specialized clinics.

The hospital’s inpatient care covers typical services such as surgery, medicine, pediatrics, including a neonatal unit, and obstetrics and gynecology.

The critical care facilities at AAR Hospital consist of a 12-bed intensive care unit, a 9-bed high dependency unit, a neonatal unit, and an 11-station dialysis facility serving both inpatient and outpatient patients.

Dr. Aysha Edwards’ leadership is expected to usher in a new era of continuity and excellence in patient care at AAR Hospital.
