UAE—The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has introduced new Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Guidelines for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), marking a significant step in enhancing care for People of Determination (PoD).
This initiative aligns with the Emirate’s ongoing efforts to improve services and support for individuals with disabilities, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable environment.
The newly released guidelines are part of Abu Dhabi’s Comprehensive Strategy for People of Determination 2020-2024, which aims to shift societal perceptions of disabilities.
Rather than viewing disabilities through a purely medical lens, the strategy embraces a more holistic, rights-based approach, focusing on social integration and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
According to WAM, ABA is a well-established, research-driven therapeutic method designed to support individuals with autism and other developmental disorders.
The therapy focuses on encouraging positive behaviors while reducing negative ones, thus fostering personal development and social adaptability.
The new ABA guidelines aim to standardize the approach to ASD care across Abu Dhabi, providing a unified framework that integrates evidence-based practices in line with international standards.
One of the key objectives of these guidelines is to empower healthcare and education professionals by fostering collaboration in delivering holistic care to ASD patients.
By improving coordination between sectors, the guidelines hope to provide children and their families with better access to ABA therapy, thereby enhancing the overall quality of care.
The guidelines place a strong emphasis on integrative care, prioritizing early intervention and ongoing support.
Speaking during the launch event, Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Healthcare Workforce Planning at DoH, emphasized Abu Dhabi’s commitment to creating an inclusive society.
He noted that the guidelines are part of broader efforts to ensure equitable access to services for People of Determination, helping them realize their full potential.
Dr. Al Suwaidi highlighted that the release of the ABA guidelines is a proactive measure that not only strengthens Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a leading healthcare destination but also elevates specialized care within the Emirate.
He further added that the standardization of ABA services ensures greater accessibility for those in need while reinforcing the Department of Health’s commitment to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system.
By fostering stronger collaboration between healthcare and education sectors, these guidelines aim to enhance the health and well-being of all community members, especially those with developmental disorders.
The initiative is also in line with DoH’s broader mission to enable a healthy population and provide world-class care to every member of society.
