Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, AstraZeneca partner to improve COPD care in Abu Dhabi

This initiative also builds on the recommendations of the Abu Dhabi Public Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) report, reinforcing the vision of a healthier Abu Dhabi.

UAE—The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and AstraZeneca FZ LLC have entered into a two-year strategic partnership to enhance public health efforts and improve care for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Abu Dhabi.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on May 13, 2025, by Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, Executive Director of the Community Health sector at ADPHC, and Sameh El Fangary, Cluster President GCC at AstraZeneca, during the 25th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi, Director General of ADPHC, emphasized that this collaboration demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing population health in Abu Dhabi through innovative and proactive approaches.

He highlighted that the partnership aims to raise public awareness, promote early screening, and provide best-in-class care for COPD patients.

This initiative also builds on the recommendations of the Abu Dhabi Public Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) report, reinforcing the vision of a healthier Abu Dhabi.

Similarly, Sameh El Fangary described the collaboration as a significant step toward addressing the growing burden of chronic respiratory diseases in the UAE.

He stated that AstraZeneca is proud to support the UAE’s healthcare priorities by sharing global best practices, enhancing education, and enabling early diagnosis and treatment pathways.

Together, they aspire to create a future where every patient can achieve better health outcomes and an improved quality of life.

As part of the disease awareness partnership, ADPHC and AstraZeneca will work together to create and carry out public awareness programs aimed at educating the public about COPD.

These programs will promote early screening and routine testing through physical and online platforms.

The two organisations will collaborate to develop early detection techniques that will enable prompt treatment and intervention by identifying COPD in its early stages.

Both the long-term health effects on individuals and the strain on the healthcare system are intended to be lessened by this strategy.

AstraZeneca will also contribute its worldwide experience in illness management and diagnostics to the collaboration, improving patient care in Abu Dhabi.

This entails planning workshops, working with foreign partners, and holding knowledge-sharing sessions with AstraZeneca affiliates around the world.

To oversee the execution of these initiatives, a joint task force composed of representatives from ADPHC and AstraZeneca will be established.

This task force will align strategic priorities, assess feasibility, and monitor progress.

All projects will require mutual approval from both parties’ leadership before implementation.

ADPHC continues to focus on improving community health through innovation and integrated public health systems, particularly addressing non-communicable diseases like cancer and respiratory illnesses.

The PHSSR report underscores the importance of early screening and legislative support to combat chronic diseases effectively.

AstraZeneca, a global leader in managing non-communicable diseases including oncology, cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and respiratory conditions such as COPD, brings valuable expertise to this collaboration.

This partnership reflects the shared dedication of ADPHC and AstraZeneca to advancing public health in Abu Dhabi by developing innovative solutions for chronic disease management, ultimately aiming to enhance the lives of COPD patients across the emirate.
