UAE – Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), and Tawam Hospital have received institutional accreditation from the Royal College Canada International (RCI).

All three facilities have the RCI’s mandate to offer residency and fellowship programmes in accredited medical specialities in Canada to physicians wishing to obtain the Canadian board specialty certification in Abu Dhabi and around the world.

The accreditation of the three facilities’ medical education programmes was the outcome of RCI’s rigorous evaluation mechanism, reflecting the facilities’ capabilities to adopt the highest standards of medical education.

It was based on the quality of the medical training programmes and their outputs along with the use of modern technology and e-learning tools in the field.

This institutional accreditation comes as part of the strategic partnership between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and the Royal College Canada International.

In 2022, the DoH and the RCI agreed to co-develop medical education training for residency and fellowship programmes, and scientific research programmes, while advancing innovation in the field of healthcare.

In his address, Dr. Rashed Obaid Alsuwaidi, Executive Director of the Healthcare Workforce Planning at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said: “Attracting and developing talent and competencies in healthcare is one of DoH’s priorities.”

The accreditation of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, and Tawam Hospital is a reflection of the DOH’s continuous efforts and investments in its healthcare workforce.

It will create more opportunities for residency and fellowship trainees seeking to obtain the necessary training in DoH’s facilities to advance their career paths towards specialisation in various medical fields approved by the department.

It marks an important milestone for the DoH as it invests in increasing the number of healthcare facilities accredited as educational institutions providing residency and fellowship programmes in the emirate.

What’s more, the RCI accreditation reinforces the three facilities’ ability to apply the best medical education in accordance with the highest international standards.

It is a signal to health professionals that Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, and Tawam Hospital provide world-class healthcare services and medical education programmes.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi is always keen on working side by side with the healthcare facilities within the emirate to provide them and their healthcare professionals with the necessary nurturing and accredited environment,” noted Dr. Rashed Obaid Alsuwaidi.

With the RCI accreditation, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, and Tawam Hospital become the first educational institutions for medical training to be accredited by the Canadian body in the United Arab Emirates.

This accreditation also brings validation to the three facilities’ medical education programmes helping to cement Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading destination for healthcare.

The three facilities, all part of the PureHealth Group, have received institutional accreditation as ideal places for health professionals to gain a high degree of competencies and expertise.

Moreover, the institutional accreditation builds on the PureHealth Group’s commitment to invest and empower the UAE’s healthcare professionals with the highest quality education and training.
