AFRICA—The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the Africa Public Health Foundation (APHF) have inked an agreement to strengthen health systems across African Union Member States.

This new agreement details the collaborative framework between the two entities, emphasizing key priority areas outlined in the Africa CDC strategy.

Central to this agreement is the focus on reinforcing public health institutions and workforce development alongside expanding local manufacturing capabilities for vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Additionally, the agreement underscores the importance of building robust partnerships with essential stakeholders within the broader health ecosystem.

This collaboration marks a new chapter in the joint efforts of Africa CDC and APHF, transitioning from an emergency response mode to addressing long-term public health challenges faced by the continent.

The partnership aims to consolidate and elevate previous achievements to new heights, ensuring a more holistic and sustained approach to public health issues.

H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, highlighted the ambitious goals of the Africa CDC’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to deliver substantial health outcomes for the continent.

Dr. Kaseya emphasized that the Africa Public Health Foundation plays a crucial role in mobilizing resources for Africa CDC, thereby enhancing public health systems across African Union Member States.

He also pointed out that the APHF supports the implementation of the New Public Health Order, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming public health on the continent.

Dr. Bernard Haufiku, APHF Governing Council Chair and Founder, on his part, expressed his enthusiasm for the new agreement between APHF and Africa CDC.

He acknowledged the strategic partnership’s positive impact, particularly in mobilizing resources to respond to health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Ebola, Marburg, and Cholera outbreaks.

Dr. Haufiku also expressed his gratitude to Africa CDC for their unwavering support since their collaboration began in 2020, noting their significant progress together.

Established to facilitate investments in public health initiatives, the APHF supports Africa CDC’s goals and objectives across the continent.

Its operational focus includes resource mobilization, grants management, advocacy for improved public health policies, private sector engagement, and contributing to the analysis of public health data.

Through these efforts, APHF actively supports the Africa CDC’s New Public Health Order mission, striving to build a healthier and more prosperous Africa.
