This expansion is part of Aga Khan University Hospital’s ongoing commitment to making specialized healthcare more accessible and convenient for its clients.
KENYA—Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, has taken another significant step in enhancing healthcare access and quality in Kenya with the opening of its newest facility, the Rhapta Medical Centre, located in Westlands along Rhapta Road.
This modern centre becomes the 54th medical facility in the hospital’s growing network, bringing high-quality healthcare services closer to communities in Nairobi.
The Rhapta Medical Centre is equipped to provide a comprehensive range of medical services. Patients can access care in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Paediatrics, Family Medicine, and Nutrition & Weight Loss.
The centre also offers vaccinations, counselling psychology, and tailored wellness programmes, ensuring a holistic approach to health for individuals and families alike.
This expansion is part of Aga Khan University Hospital’s ongoing commitment to making specialized healthcare more accessible and convenient for its clients.
The launch event was marked by the presence of Sammy Muthui, CEO of Minet Kenya, who attended as the Chief Guest. His involvement highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing healthcare delivery and innovation in the region.
This development follows closely on the heels of another major milestone for Aga Khan University Hospital: the recent introduction of a dedicated clinic focused on cholesterol (lipid) disorders.
This clinic aims to address the growing burden of heart disease in Kenya by providing targeted care and preventive strategies for patients at risk.
In addition to these local advancements, Aga Khan University has also gained international recognition for its pioneering work in digital health.
Afya Gemma, an innovative artificial intelligence-powered clinical decision support platform developed by the university’s Data Innovation Office, has been selected to participate in the prestigious 2025 Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI.
Chosen from nearly 3,000 applicants worldwide, Afya Gemma will receive a share of Google.org’s US$30 million fund, as well as six months of intensive support.
This includes technical training, Google Cloud credits, and pro bono assistance from Google employees, all designed to help the platform scale its impact.
Afya Gemma is designed to empower clinicians across Kenya by providing real-time, evidence-based guidance tailored to local healthcare needs.
The platform integrates anonymized health records from a Kenyan Electronic Health Record (EHR) repository, Kenya-specific clinical guidelines, and a curated library of peer-reviewed research.
Clinicians can access this information through natural language queries, making it easier to make informed decisions at the point of care.
The platform will be deployed in 40 facilities across the Aga Khan University Hospital and Aga Khan Health Services network, with the goal of bridging the gap between research and clinical practice.
Its multilingual interface ensures that healthcare professionals across Kenya’s diverse workforce can benefit from its insights, which are rooted in region-specific disease trends and protocols.
