INDIA – A new ultra-modern surgical robotics training centre has officially been inaugurated at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
The construction project was co-led by All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and India Medtronic, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ireland-based Medtronic plc.
The development comes as India Medtronic has partnered with Qure.ai to deploy AI-powered solutions for stroke care in India.
Additionally, Zydus Hospitals has joined forces with India Medtronic to incorporate cutting-edge artificial intelligence into stroke care in Gujarat, India.
The latest cross-sector collaboration aims to expand access to robotic-assisted surgery in India as well as create training opportunities for medical students at AIIMS, New Delhi.
The first-of-its-kind AAIMS center will leverage Medtronic’s Hugo robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system, which was first introduced in India in September 2021, to advance surgical care.
The joint statement said: “The new centre will offer a broad spectrum of training to enhance the healthcare professional’s knowledge and skill set in robotic-assisted surgery.”
Similarly, FUJIFILM India has forged a strategic partnership with the Tata Memorial Center (TMC), Mumbai to establish an advanced training facility for onco-pulmonology and interventional pulmonology procedures.
Utilizing Medtronic’s RAS system, the facility will be an innovative space for surgeons to experience basic skills training, and procedural training and gain practical skills in advanced and specialized areas in soft-tissue surgery.
“Medtronic’s partnership with AIIMS is a cornerstone of our commitment to make the benefits of RAS available to more patients in India,” asserted Michael Blackwell, Vice President & Managing Director of Medtronic India.
This development will pave the way for the emerging medical technology to be cleared or approved in different markets globally.
In the United States, Medtronic’s Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system is an investigational device not for sale.
Regulatory requirements of individual countries and regions will determine approval, clearance, or market availability.
The Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system can help standardise surgical procedures and act as medical support for surgeons as they perform complex surgeries.
Surgeons, doctors, and other healthcare professionals nationwide will come to the robotic surgery training center to advance their expertise in minimally invasive surgical procedures.
“Medtronic’s partnership with AIIMS will make training and education on the latest technology more accessible and enhance the skill sets of current and future surgeons,” stated Michael Blackwell.
Moreover, a wide range of training programs will be offered at AIIMS, New Delhi to help impart procedural knowledge skills using surgical robotics among surgeons, fellows, and residents across the country.
