Akums and SGT University form industry-academia science collaboration

INDIA – Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary University have entered into a comprehensive industry-academia alliance focused on advancing scientific research for innovation in India.

The industry-academia collaboration comes as Akums and Fermenta Biotech Limited (FBL) teamed up to manufacture and market the first-of-its-kind areola cream for lactating mothers in India and globally.

In December 2022, Akums partnered with Leiutis Pharmaceuticals LLP and Biophore India Pharmaceuticals for the research and development of a range of products for multiple therapies.

The New Delhi-based Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) will work closely with Gurugram-based SGT University to provide an innovative platform where students can have experiential learning.

This collaboration between an academic institution and an industry practitioner will focus on hands-on training to ensure students experience live-research projects of the pharmaceutical industry.

The joint statement stated: “Research and development (R&D) projects assigned to students will harbor live research experience and help them attain a detailed understanding of the ongoing trends of the pharmaceutical industry.”

Akums will help bridge the industry-academia gap by providing them access to the required resources and guidance for SGT University students.

Moreover, the agreement will pave the way for students at SGT University to access placement opportunities at Akums, the largest contract-manufacturing pharmaceutical company in India.

This collaboration between an academic institution and an industry practitioner builds on the Indian government’s efforts to make the next generation of pharmacy students future-ready to contribute to the growth of the country.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Arushi Jain, Director of Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, and the SGT University Leadership Team led by Dr. Atul Nasa.

This news follows the launch of various scientific research programmes to equip young learners with industry-fit skills in India.

Similarly, Aster DM Healthcare, through its flagship hospital Aster Medcity, entered into a collaboration agreement with the University of Michigan Medical School focused on academic and scientific research development.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) and the University at Buffalo also expanded their collaboration agreement to advance research in biomedical and bioengineering sciences.

IIT Kanpur also signed an agreement with Apollo Hospitals Group for collaborative research in the clinical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare technology.
