AKUHN to study nurse navigation in breast cancer care in Kenya

KENYA—Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi (AKUHN) has been awarded a US$100,000 grant from AstraZeneca to explore how nurse navigators can improve early breast cancer care.

The one-year “Powering Breast Cancer Progress” study will assess patient outcomes by comparing groups who receive dedicated navigation support with those who do not, focusing on early diagnosis, treatment adherence, and overall completion of care.

According to Capital FM, nurse navigators are specialized professionals who guide patients through the often complex diagnosis and treatment process.

Dr. Angela Waweru, Lead Researcher and Consultant Radiation Oncologist at AKUHN, explained that nurse navigators play a vital role in helping patients understand their diagnosis, evaluate treatment options, and manage expectations.

She noted that by coordinating care and minimizing delays, these specialists also help reduce the emotional stress that accompanies a cancer diagnosis, enabling patients to concentrate on healing.

This study is expected to generate crucial local data to support increased investment in early detection and patient navigation services in Kenya, a country where late-stage breast cancer diagnoses are still common.

Dr. Waweru added that the research will not only enhance patient support and ensure timely treatment but also contribute to overall improvements in cancer care.

Furthermore, given that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and is often detected too late due to healthcare disparities, the study underscores the importance of regular screening.

Women are encouraged to perform monthly self-examinations and follow established screening guidelines—annual mammograms for those aged 40 to 55 and biennial screenings for women between 55 and 74.

The AstraZeneca-funded research is part of a broader international effort, with similar studies underway in the United States, Nigeria, Argentina, Italy, and El Salvador.

The findings from this study could pave the way for expanding the nurse navigation model to other types of cancer, potentially transforming care practices across various regions.

Aga Khan University Hospital remains committed to advancing research, shaping effective public health policies, and developing innovative, locally relevant solutions to tackle pressing healthcare challenges in the communities it serves.
