KENYA—The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA) has granted full three-year accreditations to two Nairobi-based hospitals: Avenue Hospital in Parklands and Metropolitan Hospital in Buruburu.
This marks the second accreditation for both institutions, underscoring their unwavering commitment to continuous quality improvement in patient care.
COHSASA commended the teams at both hospitals for their consistent dedication since their initial accreditation.
The organization emphasized that these hospitals have integrated quality improvement into their daily operations, recognizing it as an ongoing journey rather than a one-time achievement.
In addition to the Nairobi hospitals, Mediclinic Constantiaberg in South Africa also received a three-year accreditation.
COHSASA highlighted that Mediclinic Constantiaberg has achieved accreditation multiple times, suggesting that a culture of continuous improvement is deeply embedded in their operations.
In December 2024, Ezulwini Private Hospital, an 87-bed facility in Mbabane, Eswatini, achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first hospital in the country to be accredited by COHSASA, receiving an impressive compliance rating of 93.
Earning COHSASA accreditation signifies that a healthcare facility has met rigorous international standards, assuring patients of safe, high-quality care.
A full accreditation award signifies that the facility has successfully completed a comprehensive quality improvement program and meets the standards established by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (ISQua-EEA).
This organization is recognized globally as the authority on healthcare quality and oversees standards across 70 countries.
COHSASA itself is accredited by ISQua-EEA, making it the only internationally recognised accrediting body for healthcare facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Facilities entering COHSASA’s program initially earn a two-year accreditation upon meeting these demanding standards.
As they continue their quality improvement journey, longer accreditation periods reflect their sustained excellence.
For instance, a four-year accreditation indicates that the facility has maintained superior standards for at least eight years.
To ensure that these standards are consistently upheld, all accredited facilities must undergo an interim survey halfway through their accreditation period.
This process ensures that quality standards remain high and that patients continue to receive outstanding care.
