USA -In a proactive bid to safeguard the nation against critical equipment shortages magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration is poised to unveil new tariffs targeting Chinese-made medical devices.

This move, expected to be announced next week, is a strategic response to fortify the United States against supply shortages, a vulnerability acutely highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to insiders.

President Joe Biden is poised to unveil a new wave of tariffs targeting key sectors, including electric vehicles, solar panels, and steel, with the exact scope and scale of the levies on medical equipment yet to be clarified.

“While the specifics of the tariffs on medical supplies remain undisclosed, they form a pivotal component of the administration’s wider strategy to safeguard the nation against supply chain disruptions witnessed during the pandemic,” the sources emphasized.

China’s heavy reliance on foreign sources for essential commodities, spanning from medical supplies to microchips, has long been a concern for its leadership. 

To mitigate this dependence, China has deployed various economic strategies, including subsidies and targeted investments, to bolster its domestic industries.

The global health crisis starkly exposed the deficiency in domestic production of critical medical equipment in the United States, from gowns and masks to ventilators. 

Consequently, the nation turned to China to bridge the shortfall, exemplifying the intricacies of interdependent global supply chains.

Imports of syringes from China surged to US$ 348 million in 2021, reflecting the heightened demand, yet witnessed a subsequent decline to approximately US$ 167 million the following year, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

“The imposition of tariffs on Chinese medical supplies underscores a broader shift towards bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing reliance on overseas producers,” commented an industry expert, highlighting the strategic pivot in U.S. trade policy.

In response to inquiries, the White House refrained from providing comments on the impending tariffs, maintaining a cautious stance ahead of the formal announcement.
