INDIA – Boston Scientific Corporation has opened its second R&D Center in India, in Pune, with the goal of capitalizing on the country’s R&D expertise and providing diverse opportunities for engineers and innovators.

Dr. Vinod K. Paul, physician scientist and serving Member of NITI Aayog, along with Art Butcher, Executive Vice President & President Boston Scientific APAC, Ralph Cardinal, Vice President R&D Boston Scientific APAC, Sanjeev Pandya, Director R&D Boston Scientific India, and Manoj Madhavan, Managing Director Boston Scientific India, officially opened the new facility.

During the inauguration, Manoj Madhavan, Managing Director Boston Scientific India said: “Innovation is very close to our hearts here at Boston Scientific, and we’re very confident about the R&D talent in India. This second R&D Center reinforces our commitment to contribute meaningfully to the innovation landscape for medical devices in India.”

In the beginning, the second India R&D Center in Pune will employ 170 engineers. It covers 45,000 square feet and is outfitted with medical equipment and simulators to help with the R&D process and to increase R&D capacity.

The Covid-19 pandemic has not only created a huge demand for pharmaceutical innovations, but it has also given a boost to research and development (R&D).

R &D has emerged as the most important segment required to meet the rising demand for more vaccines, as well as drugs and therapeutics to combat emerging diseases.

With this in mind, domestic pharma and medical devices firms are now considering increasing their investments in innovative products and R&D.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ralph Cardinal, Vice President, R&D Boston Scientific APAC said: “Investing in R&D and clinical science is critical to the development of medical technologies and solutions that support patients around the world.”

“Globally, Boston Scientific invests over US$1 billion in R&D every year and we are pleased to further include India with the opening of this second R&D Center in Pune.”

The new R&D Center will offer expertise in all areas of the company’s therapy, including interventional cardiology, peripheral interventions, cardiac rhythm management, endoscopy, neuromodulation, and urology and pelvic health.

The Pune R&D team will assist with mechanical design and analysis, software engineering, sustaining engineering, quality, and compliance.

Increased investments in innovation and R&D will spur domestic industry growth.
