Burjeel Holdings earns NIHS accreditation for medical training

UAE—Burjeel Holdings, a prominent super-specialty healthcare provider in the MENA region, achieved a significant milestone in medical education by earning accreditation from the prestigious National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) in the UAE.

This historic accomplishment further cemented Burjeel’s standing as a pioneer in healthcare training and was given to two of its specialised medical training programs: the Orthopaedic Residency Program and the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship.

In a ceremony that underscored the importance of this recognition, Dr. Mohammed Al Houqani, the Secretary General of NIHS, officially conferred the accreditation.

Among the distinguished guests at the event were Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings; H.E. Dr. Rashed Alsuwaidi, Acting Director General of Healthcare Regulatory at the Department of Health—Abu Dhabi; Mr. John Sunil, Group CEO; and Mr. Safeer Ahamed, group co-CEO.

Their collective presence highlighted the collaborative effort between healthcare leaders and regulatory bodies to set new medical education benchmarks.

Notably, the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship marks a historic moment as it is the first accredited program of its kind within the UAE’s private healthcare sector.

This pioneering step not only reflects Burjeel Holdings’ commitment to advancing cancer care but also sets a precedent that is expected to influence similar initiatives across the region.

At the same time, the accreditation of the Orthopedic Residency Program represents a major leap forward in Abu Dhabi’s private healthcare landscape, ensuring that aspiring orthopedic specialists receive training that meets global standards.

During the ceremony, Dr. Mohammed Al Houqani praised Burjeel Holdings for its significant contributions to medical education.

He commended the group’s efforts in creating a training environment that adheres to best medical practices, ultimately aimed at nurturing a highly qualified healthcare workforce.

In addition, Dr. Tahani Al Qadiri, Group Director of Emiratization and Academics at Burjeel Holdings, emphasized that this accreditation is a testament to the organization’s dedication to cultivating the next generation of specialized healthcare professionals.

She explained that the achievement not only reinforces Burjeel’s leadership in private-sector medical education but also enhances Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem by nurturing highly skilled specialists.

Furthermore, these specialized programs are designed to offer rigorous, hands-on training.

The Orthopedic Residency Program will provide trainees with comprehensive clinical experience, while the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship is structured to develop experts in cancer care.

Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute, noted that these initiatives are set to improve patient outcomes by establishing a clear, structured pathway for developing top-tier oncologists.

Similarly, Dr Mohamed Muath ADI, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Program Director of the Orthopedic Residency Program expressed his optimism that this milestone will significantly elevate the quality of orthopaedic education and care across the region.
