Codix Bio pioneers rapid diagnostic test kits in Nigeria

NIGERIA— Codix Pharma Ltd is set to launch Codix Bio Ltd, Nigeria’s first large-scale facility dedicated to producing rapid diagnostic test kits locally.

Scheduled to begin operations in May 2025 in Sagamu, Ogun State, this state-of-the-art plant marks a major milestone for Nigeria and the wider African region, as it is only the second facility of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

For decades, over 90% of Africa’s rapid diagnostic test kits-used for diseases such as malaria, HIV, and hepatitis B and C-have been imported from Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

This heavy reliance has made the continent vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions, inflated costs, and delayed access to essential diagnostics.

With Codix Bio, Nigeria aims to change this narrative by providing a reliable, homegrown source for these critical medical tools.

Mary Ogangwu, Chief Operating Officer of Codix Pharma, described the new facility as a “game-changer” for Africa’s healthcare sector.

She emphasized that Codix Bio will adhere to international standards, including WHO prequalification and US FDA regulations, ensuring that the kits produced are of the highest quality, safety, and efficacy.

The factory will also comply with ISO 13485 and WHO Good Manufacturing Practices, positioning it to serve not just Nigeria but also export to West Africa and beyond.

The facility has already completed its design, construction, and installation of clean-room environments and advanced air filtration systems.

It is now in the final stages of qualification and validation, with commissioning set for next month.

This development aligns with Nigeria’s broader health sector reforms, including recent government policies that exempt pharmaceutical equipment from tariffs, making local manufacturing more viable.

Codix Pharma’s journey began in 2008 with a focus on pharmaceuticals for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Recognizing a critical gap in diagnostics, the company shifted its strategy toward medical devices.

The launch of Codix Bio follows the earlier success of Colexa Biosensor, sub-Saharan Africa’s first factory for blood glucose meters and strips, inaugurated in December 2023.

By producing rapid diagnostic kits locally, Codix Bio is expected to reduce stockouts, lower testing costs, and improve healthcare outcomes, especially in rural and underserved communities.

The initiative is also in line with the World Health Organization’s call for increased local production in low- and middle-income countries to boost access, affordability, and health security.
