Dr. Ahmed Ogwell to lead VillageReach as new CEO

Dr. Ogwell, who is well-known for his knowledge of non-communicable illnesses, health emergencies, health policy, and global health diplomacy, has spearheaded international discussions to influence policy reforms throughout Africa.

USA—Dr. Ahmed Ogwell, a distinguished leader in global health, will become the new CEO of VillageReach in May 2025, succeeding Emily Bancroft, who has led the organization since 2017.

Bancroft’s tenure was marked by significant growth, expanding access to quality health care from 20 million to 111 million people, laying a strong foundation for VillageReach’s ambitious 2030 strategy.

Dr. Ogwell brings nearly 30 years of experience in health systems strengthening and policy reform across Africa.

He has held key roles including Vice President of Global Health Strategy at the United Nations Foundation, where he managed major portfolios aligned with the UN’s global health initiatives.

He also played a pivotal role at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), leading the continent’s COVID-19 response and advancing Africa’s New Public Health Order.

His career includes influential positions at the World Health Organization and Kenya’s Ministry of Health, where he founded the Office for International Health Relations and the Department for Non-Communicable Diseases.

Known for his expertise in health emergencies, non-communicable diseases, health policy, and global health diplomacy, Dr. Ogwell has led international negotiations to drive policy changes across Africa.

Holding advanced degrees from the University of Nairobi and the University of Bergen, he is deeply committed to tackling the complex challenges facing global health today.

Dr. Ogwell emphasized the critical moment they face: addressing infectious disease outbreaks, funding uncertainties, and other multifaceted health challenges.

He stressed the need for united efforts, innovative solutions, and stronger health systems to overcome these obstacles. He expressed honor in joining VillageReach at this pivotal time to help realize the organization’s 2030 goals.

VillageReach’s 2030 Strategy, now entering its second year, focuses on responsive primary health care that adapts to changing demands, absorbs shocks, and meets the needs of under-reached communities.

The strategy aims to reduce inequities in access to quality health services.

Dr. Ogwell’s leadership will be crucial in building on this foundation, supporting government priorities, and ensuring the success of national health plans.

Sena Kwawu, Chair of the VillageReach Board, highlighted the unprecedented challenges caused by aid disruptions in many countries where VillageReach operates.

He noted that while these challenges were unforeseen when the search for a new CEO began, Dr. Ogwell’s deep knowledge of African health systems and the organization’s strong 2030 Strategy inspire confidence in his ability to guide VillageReach through these uncertain times.

As VillageReach continues its mission to transform health care delivery and reach everyone, Dr. Ogwell’s leadership is expected to drive meaningful impact, ensuring that vulnerable and under-served communities receive the health care they need to thrive.

Under his guidance, VillageReach aims to fulfill its strategic goals and strengthen health systems across Africa and beyond.
