KENYA — Dr. Kalebi Labs (DKL) has officially received ISO 15189 certification from the Kenya National Accreditation Service (KENAS), effective December 20, 2024.
This milestone follows a successful assessment of DKL’s Central Referral Lab on November 26-27, 2024, and marks a significant achievement for the lab, which has been operational for just a few months.
In a LinkedIn post, Dr. Kalebi celebrated the accomplishment, emphasizing the team’s dedication and hard work throughout the process.
He shared that the accreditation is a testament to the high standards of the lab’s Quality Management Systems (QMS), which are aligned with international best practices.
DKL is committed to external quality assurance (EQA) and follows stringent quality control (QC) procedures for all its tests, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
This achievement comes just six months after DKL began construction and setup in May 2024, and three months after the lab was registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) as a Class G National and International Referral Lab in September 2024.
Dr. Kalebi expressed pride in how quickly the lab has grown, from its early stages to becoming ISO 15189 accredited.
The team at DKL, which includes over 102 staff members—among them five pathologists—received special recognition from Dr. Kalebi.
He commended their dedication and ability to navigate the challenges of participating in an ISO 15189 accreditation for the first time.
Dr. Kalebi reflected on the lab’s journey, noting that it began as a greenfield project in May 2024, starting from scratch.
The team developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and implemented the QMS and EQA verifications while establishing and operationalizing the lab.
The integration of first-of-their-kind automated lab machines and advanced IT systems made this rapid progress possible.
DKL, incorporated on December 22, 2023, is located in Upper Hill, Nairobi, just 300 meters from the Kenyatta National Hospital.
This state-of-the-art lab features Africa’s first total lab automation (TLA) system, offering world-class services and a wide range of locally available tests.
Dr. Kalebi and his team are eager to receive the official ISO 15189 certificate in the coming weeks from KENAS to commemorate this remarkable milestone.
