AFRICA – Dr. Mazyanga Lucy Mazaba, a renowned public health expert with over 27 years of experience, has been appointed as the new Regional Director for the Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
Dr. Mazaba brings a wealth of expertise in virology, epidemiology, strategic communication, risk assessments, surveillance, outbreak response, and research.
She has published over 150 scientific articles, including 80 as the first author, and has authored five books.
“We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Mazyanga Lucy Mazaba as our newly appointed Regional Director for the Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre, Africa CDC,” the Africa CDC announced on Twitter.
“Dr. Mazaba brings over 27 years of extensive experience in public health, virology, epidemiology, and strategic communication.

In her new role, Dr. Mazaba will lead the Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre, which serves countries in the region.
She has been key in establishing and operationalizing the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) and the Africa CDC Southern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre.
“While I got the position of Regional Director of the Africa CDC Eastern Africa Region through a competitive process, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Dr. Mazaba said on X (formerly Twitter).
“I look forward to working with the team to advance the public health agenda in the region.”
Dr. Mazaba is a seasoned public health professional with a strong track record of achievements.
She has published over 145 scientific articles, with over 80 as the first author, and has authored five books.
Her expertise spans various areas, including laboratory diagnostics, epidemiology, strategic communication, risk assessments, surveillance, and outbreak response.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Mazaba is also a philanthropist and subsistence farmer.
She enjoys baking, flower gardening, sports, and keeping fit. She is a mother of five, including a son-in-law and a grandmother to two beautiful girls.
