KENYA—Dr. Philip Kiptanui Kirwa has been appointed CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), effective May 17, 2024.
He replaces Dr. Wilson Aruasa, whose term ended in January 2024.
The announcement was made on behalf of MTRH by Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, Chairman of the MTRH Board of Management, following a competitive recruitment process and the concurrence of the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Mr. Felix Koskei, EGH.
Dr. Kirwa brings over 20 years of experience and a distinguished track record to his new role at MTRH.
He has served in various capacities, demonstrating exceptional expertise in both clinical practice and organisational management.
His roles have included Medical Director of Private Wings, Director of Reproductive Health, and, most recently, Senior Director of Clinical Services at MTRH.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Kirwa was the acting CEO of MTRH. He earned his medical degree from the University of Nairobi and furthered his education with a Master’s degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from the same institution.
He is registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and is a member of the Kenya Medical Association, the Kenya Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society, and a fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of East, Central, and South Africa.
These credentials have equipped him with the necessary skills and competencies to lead a large and complex healthcare institution.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kirwa has demonstrated a commitment to improving patient care, implementing innovative healthcare solutions, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
His leadership style is characterized by a strong focus on patient-centered care, efficiency in hospital operations, and the professional development of medical staff.
While welcoming him, the MTRH Board expressed confidence that Dr. Kirwa’s expertise and leadership will be instrumental in guiding Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital towards continued excellence and growth.
The statement went on to mention that they look forward to the positive impact he will bring to their patients, staff, and the wider community.
Addressing the hospital staff at the hospital’s Chandaria Grounds, Dr. Kirwa dedicated his appointment to the thousands of Kenyans and those from across the borders seeking healthcare services at MTRH.
He thanked the appointing authority, H.E. the President, the Cabinet Secretary of Health, and the Board for trusting his leadership.
He also announced that starting in July, healthcare provision will improve through the government’s Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and the related new health laws, highlighting upcoming services such as the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory stationed at the hospital’s private wing.
