Egypt earns digital health recognition at Arab Hospitals Federation’s annual awards

EGYPT – The General Authority for Healthcare (GAH) has been awarded the Platinum Award in Digital Health Leadership, presented by the Arab Hospitals Federation, in recognition of the organization’s efforts to digitize healthcare services.

In an award ceremony hosted by the AHF in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sobky, received the Platinum Award in Digital Health Leadership on behalf of Egypt.

He pointed out that Egypt’s winning of this award for the first time is a testimony of success for all active partners in automating the Comprehensive Health Insurance System.

In his address, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sobky said: “Digital transformation is the cornerstone of any society seeking to advance and develop its health services.”

The Egyptian Government has committed US$1.09 billion in funding for health infrastructure in the first phase of its Comprehensive Health Insurance System.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Sobky elaborated that the first phase includes the development of more than 50 hospitals and more than 300 family medicine centers and units in six provinces.

Notably, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sobky also serves as the General Supervisor of the Comprehensive Health Insurance and Haya Karima projects at the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

The General Authority for Healthcare remains committed to leveraging digital capabilities to implement the Comprehensive Health Insurance System.

GAH is the main medical service provider in the newly established Universal Health Insurance system in Egypt.

For instance, the General Authority for Healthcare and Ibnsina Pharma signed a cooperation protocol that will see the latter provide the authority with support for plans to digitalize its health services.

It is part of the GAH’s efforts to develop, upgrade, and regulate healthcare service providers and supervise the healthcare services provided to Egyptian citizens using digital solutions.

Hence, the Platinum Award in Digital Health Leadership recognizes the authority’s contribution to completing over 4 million electronic health files for citizens in the governorates of Egypt.

This award comes as the General Authority for Healthcare continues to implement the electronic referral system from primary healthcare units and centers to higher levels of service.

The government entity is also currently implementing the ICD11 international health codes system as the first country in the Northern and Eastern Mediterranean region.

The prestigious digital health award is a clear reflection of the country’s ongoing endeavors in the pursuit of political leadership and government toward digital transformation.

The Arab Hospitals Federation Awards recognize distinguished personalities and healthcare organizations in various fields who have made outstanding achievements and contributions to advance the Arab health sector.

It is dedicated to honoring the key players committed to implementing innovation and technologies, reinforcing investments, improving patient outcomes, enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, increasing access to care, advancing research, and leading the healthcare sector towards digital transformation.

In another sector, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) was awarded the Gold Initiative Certificate for Digital Transformation in the category of Innovations in Telehealth.

The award was given for the impactful work of the National Mental Health Helpline (NMHH), which is operated by HMC’s Mental Health Service.
