EGYPT – The Egyptian government and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have agreed to enhance their strategic cooperation as a way to move towards universal health coverage (UHC).

This comes as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Egyptian government signed a US$330 million (44 billion Japanese yen) loan agreement to support the rollout of a comprehensive health insurance scheme in the country.

Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met with Sheikh Omar Sylla, the Regional Director of IFC for North Africa, to discuss strengthening cooperation in the health sector.

The parties expressed interest in expanding their longstanding collaboration to develop a strategic plan to attract local and international investment in the health system.

They held in-depth talks about cooperation with international finance in developing concepts and an investment map to identify investment opportunities in all areas of health care.

They also agreed to explore collaboration in the field of health culture and awareness of public health and epidemiology and benefit from the expertise of the concerned authorities in this field.

Additionally, the official representatives laid the foundation for attractive methods for attractive investments in health services.

This strategic move will yield its fruits in encouraging the consolidation of partnerships between the public and private sectors, as well as bringing foreign investments to Egypt.

The Egyptian health minister emphasized the need for both parties to benefit from successful and pioneering models, including locally and internationally, in the areas of common interest.

Egypt and the International Finance Corporation have a steady diplomatic relationship that has led to their collaboration on various development projects besides initiatives in the health sector.

This collaboration underscores Egypt’s and IFC’s longstanding commitment to improving and raising the efficiency of the quality of health systems.

This includes the establishment of joint working groups between the two sides, to provide the best health and treatment care to Egyptian citizens, in line with reaching the target of Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Moreover, the meeting also touched on strengthening cooperation in the field of training medical teams, to exchange scientific experiences and refine the skills of human cadres.

The strategic alliance will ensure the improvement of different levels of health performance in medical facilities nationwide.

Furthermore, Egypt and the International Finance Corporation will coordinate closely in the field of raising the efficiency of healthcare units throughout the country.
