EGYPT – High-level officials of the Egyptian Government are pushing for the construction of the first-ever blood bag manufacturing plant in the country.
The new manufacturing site is expected to produce blood bags, anticoagulants, and supplies used in blood transfusions for patients across the country.
The Egypt-based manufacturing facility is projected to have a production capacity of close to 2.5 million blood bags per annum.
According to a government notice, the Egyptian Minister of Public Enterprise Sector, Mahmoud Esmat, met with the Head of the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority (UPA), Bahaa El Din Zeidan, and his accompanying delegation to discuss the groundbreaking construction project.
Senior government officials are taking steps to expand local production capacities in the region, and in turn, develop and supply essential blood products for all citizens of Egypt.
On his part, Minister of Public Enterprise Sector Mahmoud Esmat emphasized the importance of the blood bags manufacturing project within the integrated project of the UPA.
He disclosed that the project will be implemented through a public-private partnership between Holdipharma, UPA, and two private-sector companies to meet local market needs.
“The UPA has played an important role in developing the proposed project including the manufacture of blood bags and their requirements, means of anticoagulation, transfer, and localization of this technology, and training of workers, in cooperation with the Japanese partner and local partners,” said Minister Mahmoud Esmat.
Mahmoud Esmat further said that the government project will be implemented in cooperation with a Japanese company as part of their collaborative efforts to open doors for transferring technology and localizing the industry.
What’s more, this timely construction project will benefit all stakeholders in the Egyptian health sector as blood bags are crucial tools in blood transfusion processes, allowing medical professionals to safely store and transport blood components.
“This project will help Egypt to secure the needs of blood and its various derivatives within the framework of the state’s general policy to support manufacturing, technology transfer, and the localization of various industries,” stated Esmat.
Moreover, the Egyptian official declared the government’s commitment to establishing the first-of-its-kind blood bag manufacturing factory that will cater to both domestic and international markets.
The locally-made blood bags, products, and anticoagulants will be exported to neighboring markets in Africa and countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Esmat stressed the importance of integration between public and private sectors to advance the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt and deepen local manufacturing.
There are huge and distinct investment opportunities for the private sector to participate in the development and restructuring of economic sectors and projects implemented by companies affiliated with Egypt’s Ministry of Public Enterprise.
Consequently, the proposed project will help Egypt to realize its local industry goals set out in the country’s general policy to support manufacturing, technology transfer, and the localization of various industries.
“The integration between public and private sectors is crucial, with a focus on what the local and foreign private sectors possess in modern technology capabilities and accumulated experience in management,” outlined Esmat.
Upon the timely completion of the construction project, key stakeholders will be able to tap into the global blood bags market size, which was valued at US$3.26 billion in 2022.
Evidence-based data from ReportLinker shows that the global blood bags market size is expected to reach US$5.84 billion in 2030, with a CAGR of 7.56% for the forecast period between 2023 and 2030.
