INDIA – The Ella Foundation and the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison Global Health Institute (GHI) have agreed to establish the first ever “UW-Madison One Health Center” in India.
The UW-Madison Global One Health Center will be located in Bangalore and is expected to be operational by end of 2023.
It will be part of GHI’s global network of One Health Centers in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
Ella Foundation and UW’s Global Health Institute have formed a strategic partnership to establish the one-of-its-kind One Health Center to accelerate vaccine development and deployment in India.
In a press release, UW-Madison GHI Director Dr. Jorge Osorio said: “The partnership between GHI and the Ella Foundation will continue GHI’s outreach efforts to establish a One Health Center in India.”
He pointed out that the partnership presents an opportunity for the varsity to expand innovative and impactful health initiatives outside Wisconsin to India.
“The India One Health Center will open new opportunities for research, and education, and provide actionable outcomes to benefit humans, animals, and ecosystems that advance equitable and sustainable health across India and the world,” Dr. Osorio added.
The scientific research agreement will also allow the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) to provide financial support, actively manage assets, and move innovations to the marketplace for a financial return and global impact.
Under the agreement, the Ella Foundation and UW’s Global Health Institute will work closely to provide Indian students and researchers access to UW expertise and training, as well as build research capacity in India.
The UW-Madison Global One Health Center in India will also provide opportunities for UW students and researchers to work first-hand with emerging infectious diseases.
In addition to facilitating student and faculty exchanges, the recent partnership will expand interdisciplinary collaborations between UW-Madison Global Health Institute, Ella Foundation, and Bharat Biotech.
It will help to address the complex determinants of health and disease as well as assess local needs and priorities that will drive research and intervention.
Commenting on the strategic deal, Dr. Krishna Ella, Director, Ella Foundation, Co-Founder and Executive Vice Chairman of Bharat Biotech, said: “Both Ella Foundation and UW-Madison GHI share a common vision to advance innovation in science, research, and knowledge sharing.”
He underscored that establishing the UW-Madison Global One Health Center will play a significant role in advancing global health through research, education, and community engagement.
Moreover, Dr. Krishna Ella highlighted the importance of addressing global health for a healthy India and a healthy world.
The partnership will also build on Ella Foundation’s mission is to generate knowledge for human and animal health, and contribute to economic advancement through research and development (R&D) in contemporary biomedical and veterinary sciences.
