Ethiopia seeks out Pakistan to explore areas of cooperation in health education and research

ETHIOPIA— A six-member delegation from Ethiopia led by H.E. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Islamic Republic of Pakistan, called upon the Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination and its associated departments and institutions.

Both countries have agreed to explore different avenues to strengthen cooperation in the health care sector especially through academic and research collaboration.

The delegation, led by H.E. Dr. Abdulahi Hussein, Vice President of Jigjiga University of Ethiopia, paid a visit to the Ministry of National Health Services and met with Director General Health Dr. Baseer Achakzai to discuss cooperation.

On the occasion, Amb. Jemal Beker stressed on establishing institutional linkages in health care sector between the two countries.

The ambassador along with the delegation briefed the Director General about health care and medical training systems in Ethiopia.

Both sides agreed to work out memorandums of understanding to strengthen the cooperation of the two countries in the health sector.

The delegation also visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and had comprehensive discussion on cooperation in the medical sector.

The delegation was called on the Executive Director of PIMS where they received a detailed briefing on the functioning of the institute.

Establishing strong connections for health education and research

The Ethiopian delegation also paid a courtesy visit to College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP), Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, and Al-Maroof Hospital Islamabad.

The visit to the health academic institutions underscored the need to explore opportunities for establishing and developing collaboration in medical education between the two countries.

The President of CPSP Professor Khalid Masud Gondal also joined the meeting through video link.

The CPSP office bearers and the visiting delegation exchanged thoughts and ideas during the meeting focusing on collaborative efforts between the two countries to enhance medical education.

The Ethiopian delegation has asked the CPSP to work in Ethiopia to improve specialized medical education there and we have informed the delegation that they would have to approach the CPSP through foreign office and other concerned government departments in Pakistan for the purpose, said Professor Shoaib Shafi.

Prof. Shafi added the delegation was also informed of the services of CPSP being provided in medical education in countries including UK, Ireland, Nepal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan through collaborative efforts of these countries and medical universities there.

The Ethiopian delegation expressed desire of accrediting medical institutions in Ethiopia by the CPSP.

The CPSP assured the delegation of due process and consideration for accreditation by CPSP.

Dr Abdulahi Hussen Abdinur acknowledged the warm reception and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with the CPSP.
