GCB Bank breaks ground for new paediatric unit at University of Ghana Hospital

GHANA—GCB Bank PLC, one of Ghana’s leading banks with 184 branches and 340 ATMs, has taken a significant step in supporting healthcare by starting the construction of a new Paediatric Unit at the University of Ghana Hospital.

This initiative is part of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to improve healthcare services, particularly for children and the most vulnerable in society.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the University of Ghana Hospital, brought together key leaders from GCB Bank, the hospital, and the academic community.

Representatives from the Bank included the Managing Director, Mr. Ko Adomakoh; Executive Director for Wholesale and Investment Banking, Mr. Sam Aidoo; and the Head of Corporate Banking, Mr. Linus Kumi.

The University’s delegation was led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and included senior academics such as Professor Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, Chairman of the Hospital Management Committee, and Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, among others.

Once completed, the Paediatric Unit will feature state-of-the-art facilities to provide specialized care for children.

The unit will include a six-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for preterm babies, an eight-bed high-dependency unit, and an eight-bed infant unit.

Additionally, it will house a two-bedroom isolation unit, two private rooms, a 16-bed ward for toddlers and older children, a theatre and recovery unit, and a three-room labour and delivery suite equipped with modern technology.

Speaking at the event, GCB Bank Managing Director, Mr. Adomakoh, emphasized the Bank’s commitment to community well-being.

He noted that the construction of the Paediatric Unit is not just an infrastructure project but a meaningful investment in children’s health, the healthcare system’s resilience, and the community’s prosperity.

“This project is a reflection of our broader commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Appiah Amfo, expressed gratitude for the Bank’s support, acknowledging that transforming healthcare at the University requires collaboration with external partners.

She highlighted the strong and enduring relationship between GCB Bank and the University, which spans over 60 years.

She also noted that this partnership has led to several impactful projects, with the Paediatric Unit being the latest effort to address critical healthcare needs for the University and nearby communities.

In addition to this project, GCB Bank has consistently supported Ghana’s healthcare sector through donations of cash, equipment, and infrastructure to institutions such as the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and 37 Military Hospital.
