EUROPE—Geisinger has partnered with Medacta Group SA, a Swiss company renowned for its innovative joint replacement, sports medicine, and spine surgery solutions, to offer a groundbreaking lifetime guarantee for reverse shoulder replacement surgery.
This new initiative promises to cover the total cost of care for patients throughout their lives, setting a new standard in orthopaedic surgery.
Mark Pallis, D.O., regional director of orthopaedic surgery at Geisinger, performed the first lifetime-guaranteed reverse shoulder replacement at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Dr. Pallis emphasised the significance of the procedure, noting that it is the world’s first reverse shoulder arthroplasty with a lifetime guarantee.
He explained that state-of-the-art technology was used during the surgery, including intraoperative navigation with sensors to ensure precise placement of the implants.
This technology helps guide the surgeon in areas such as pin placement, reaming depth, and screw length.
According to Dr. Pallis, the results were nearly identical to the preoperative plan based on 3D modelling from a CT scan of the shoulder.
A reverse shoulder replacement is commonly performed on patients with arthritis and a non-functional or torn rotator cuff.
Unlike a traditional shoulder replacement, the ball portion of the shoulder is placed where the socket was, and the socket is positioned where the humeral head was.
This partnership builds on Geisinger and Medacta’s previous collaboration, which offered groundbreaking guarantees for hip and knee replacement surgeries and spinal fusion under Geisinger’s ProvenCare® program.
This program provides comprehensive coverage, including inpatient care and follow-up visits for up to 90 days after surgery, ensuring that patients are fully supported throughout their recovery.
Michael Suk, M.D., J.D., chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Geisinger, expressed his excitement about expanding the ProvenCare® program to include reverse shoulder replacements.
He explained that the new guarantee gives patients added confidence when deciding to undergo the procedure, reinforcing Geisinger’s commitment to providing exceptional care and peace of mind to their patients.
