GHANA– Ghana’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the release of an additional GHS 135.6 million (US$8.7M) to healthcare providers nationwide.
This funding is aimed at settling outstanding claims from February 2024 for higher-tier healthcare providers and March 2024 for most clients at lower-tier facilities.
The disbursement is also intended to close the gap between the higher-tier and lower-tier facility payments, ensuring that the Authority’s only outstanding claims will be within the agreed three-month reimbursable period with the facilities.
According to the press release from the NHIA, signed by Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, the Chief Executive Officer, this additional funding of GHS135.6 million(US$8.7M) was released in July, following an earlier release of GHS300 million by the Authority to mixed-tier health facilities across the country.
The statement noted that the NHIA recognizes the critical role healthcare providers play in the success of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and is dedicated to maintaining a robust partnership with facilities without compromising on illegal charges.
The disbursement is part of the Authority’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of healthcare delivery under the NHIS.
“We thank all healthcare providers for their continued dedication and support in providing excellent healthcare services to our citizens,” the statement said.
The NHIA pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders to address concerns and work towards a sustainable and efficient healthcare system.
The release of these additional funds is a significant step in the NHIA’s efforts to support healthcare providers and ensure the smooth operation of the NHIS.
By addressing outstanding claims and closing the gap between higher-tier and lower-tier facility payments, the Authority aims to maintain a strong partnership with healthcare providers and deliver efficient healthcare services to the people of Ghana.
