KENYA – IFC’s Africa Medical Equipment Facility (AMEF) and bioMérieux have joined forces in a move that will expand opportunities for hospitals and stand-alone laboratories in Africa to obtain and service in vitro diagnostic equipment used to diagnose infectious diseases.

The facility works with partner financial institutions and medical equipment manufacturers to make affordable, long-term funding available to African healthcare providers in concerted efforts to ensure they can purchase equipment needed to deliver quality care to patients.

AMEF, which helps healthcare providers in sub-Saharan Africa access medical equipment and supplies, announced in a press release that the facility has welcomed the laboratory diagnostic equipment provider to its growing roster of world-class partners.

The Africa Medical Equipment Facility further disclosed its expansion plans into the key markets of Cameroon, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda, adding that AMEF is currently active in Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya.

AMEF also helps these smaller health providers access procurement training and equipment servicing thanks to its partnership with bioMérieux and other partners in the facility,” the IFC-led facility said.

According to the official statement, France-headquartered bioMérieux’s participation in the facility will expand opportunities for hospitals and stand-alone laboratories in Africa to obtain and service in vitro diagnostic equipment used to diagnose infectious diseases.

“bioMérieux Africa’s commitment to improve global public health by fighting against infectious diseases took another important step forward today,” said Sindé Chekete, bioMérieux Senior Vice President, Africa Region.

The Senior VC further underscored that the agreement signed with IFC will directly benefit numerous laboratories, hospitals and the healthcare ecosystem as a whole.

Henrik Elschner Pedersen, IFC’s Africa Director for Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services, said: “IFC is working with bioMérieux to build a stronger, more resilient health system across Africa.”

He further said that the partnership is currently deploying innovative financing solutions to enable more of Africa’s smaller private medical providers to purchase and maintain laboratory equipment.

At the same time, IFC’s Africa Medical Equipment Facility recently welcomed Elekta, a leading provider of radiation therapy for treating cancer, to its growing roster of world-class partners who are improving access to medical equipment and supplies to healthcare providers across sub-Saharan Africa.

The IFC-Elekta partnership aims to help hospitals and stand-alone clinics in sub-Saharan Africa to easily obtain and service precision radiotherapy and oncology equipment used to treat cervical, breast, brain, lung and other types of cancer.
