INDIA – The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) and the University at Buffalo, a public research university in the United States, have expanded their collaboration agreement to advance research in biomedical and bioengineering sciences.
The signing ceremony was presided over by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur, and Prof A. Scott Weber, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University at Buffalo.
Under the research agreement, the two parties will set up the IITK-UB Joint Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Biomedicine and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur premises in India.
The research focus of this Centre will be on developing materials and technologies for both in vitro (studies performed with cells) and in vivo (studies performed with animals) applications in biosciences.
The news comes after a Joint Degree Programme agreement that was signed between IIT-K and UB in 2017.
This move aimed to provide selected doctoral students at either institutes the opportunity to conduct research at the partner institute and earn two degrees, one each from IIT-K and UB.
Both institutes have strategic objectives to collaborate for research to build a robust ecosystem in biomedicine and bioengineering.
The upcoming world-class research facility will facilitate long-term collaborations in education and research between IIT-K and University at Buffalo while empowering researchers based in other institutions.
The formation of the Centre under the agreement will enable the sharing of experiences with cutting-edge teaching strategies and course design between IIT-K and the University at Buffalo.
Additionally, it will facilitate the exchange of students and researchers between IIT-K and the University at Buffalo as well as collaborative research and training programs.
As a result of this collaboration, opportunities for joint conferences, thematic workshops, and the exchange of scholarly material will be made possible.
It comes barely a month after the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur signed an agreement with Apollo Hospitals Group for collaborative research in the clinical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare technology.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur improved its rankings in the recently-announced QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
The institute has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world for Computer Science & Information Systems and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
In March 2023, IIT Kanpur licensed a novel technology to Reliance Life Sciences Private Limited that has the potential to revolutionize the field of gene therapy, especially for many genetic eye diseases.
