India MedTech Expo 2023 comes to an end with industry-academia in the spotlight

INDIA – India’s first medical technology expo under the title ‘India MedTech Expo 2023’ came to an end after three days of in-depth discussions.

The first edition of the India MedTech Expo took place from 17 August to 19 August at the Helipad Exhibition Centre (HEC) in Gandhinagar in the state of Gujarat.

In connection with the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting under G20 India Presidency, the MedTech Expo was organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Government of India.

It is expected to increase the visibility of the medical devices ecosystem to the world and build a brand identity for the Indian MedTech sector.

Commenting on the benefit of hosting this event, Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said: “Over the years, India has been recognized as the pharmacy of the world. It is now time for India to take the lead in the medical devices sector and become the leader in the manufacturing of affordable, innovative, and quality medical devices.”

The three-day event sought to explore collaborations for the medical devices sector’s growth in India and its potential contribution globally.

The event drew in the participation of key stakeholders including Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) participants, innovative entrepreneurs, startups, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), R&D Facilities, incubators, and Public and Private Hospitals.

In the exhibition, a huge range of medical equipment ranging from state-of-the-art imaging systems to precision surgical instruments, from wearable health monitors to artificial intelligence-driven diagnostic tools, were on display.

India MedTech Expo 2023 brought together senior representatives from the medical devices industry, academia, research institutions, investors, state governments, MedTech parks, and the Government bureaucrats.

As a result, it was an ideal platform for industry leaders in the local, regional, and international community to highlight the capabilities of the Indian medical devices sector under the G20 Indian Presidency.

The discussion between policymakers, international diplomats, and industry leaders looked at success stories as well as opportunities for future industry-academia linkage in the MedTech sector.

They also identified various initiatives taken by the Government of India for bridging the skill gap in the MedTech sector.

On his part, Shri Manoj Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary at the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat, said: “All the key stakeholders of the healthcare ecosystem need to work together to facilitate implementation of value-based procurement in India.”

Additionally, India MedTech Expo 2023 provided invaluable networking opportunities for participants to interact and forge connections with their peers, share insights and expand their knowledge.

This expo comes at a pivotal time when the Government of India has notified a scheme for “Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech Sector” with a tentative cost of Rs 700 crores (up to US$48,476,454) over the next five years.

Moreover, the India MedTech Expo provided several ideas on how to accelerate the growth of the Indian pharmaceuticals sector, to ease the life of the elderly and the public at large, as well as ways of strengthening indigenous manufacturing of medical devices.

The debut event made important progress in key matters regarding health technology assessment, technology transfer, and capacity building in the MedTech sector.

Consequently, the India MedTech Expo becomes the first-ever expo of the Indian Medtech Industry by the Government of India.
