India to launch its cutting-edge robotic surgery training center at AIIMS Delhi

INDIA – The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has announced plans to set up a state-of-the-art robotic surgery training facility on its campus in New Delhi.

Surgeons, doctors and other healthcare professionals across the country will come to the upcoming robotic surgery training center to advance their expertise in minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The first-of-its-kind facility in India will also help in stemming the rising number of junior doctors leaving their training programs to train overseas for specialty training.

It will help equip surgical trainees with advanced technological robotic skills to meet the ever-evolving patient needs across the country while ensuring adequate availability of trained experts.

In an official note, AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas said: “The premier hospital will float an open expression of interest (EOI) to invite Robotic Surgery System manufacturers (OEMs) to co-create and develop robotic surgery training facilities at AIIMS on a not-for-profit basis within the next 3-6 months.”

The OEMs will be expected to install the complete robotic surgery training platform, provide related accessories and consumables free of cost, as well as invite external experts for imparting training on the latest techniques at their own cost, in agreement with AIIMS authorities.

Dr. Srinivas pointed out that AIIMS Delhi will provide around 500 square feet of space, academic areas, cadavers for training and a pool of trained faculty with a wealth of experience in robotic-assisted surgery.

Robotic-assisted surgery is one of the newest areas of innovation in minimally invasive surgery. AIIMS Delhi has a talent pool of faculty using robotic surgical systems for many years,” underscored the Director.

The inclusion of robotic surgery training is among several innovative initiatives in medical technology being adopted by AIIMS Delhi to enhance the surgical skills of doctors from AIIMS New Delhi and various healthcare facilities in India.

The training center construction project follows the partnership between All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology-Delhi to advance digital health.

AIIMS and IIIT-Delhi will work closely on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and computational genomics to promote research around clinical medicine, public health, and biomedicine.

In addition, All India Institute of Medical Sciences is in advanced talks with selected government hospitals in New Delhi to ensure timely cross referral of patients across the city.
