Iraq launches 100-bed hospital project in Baghdad under China infrastructure deal

IRAQ—Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the construction of a new 100-bed hospital in Al-Rahmaniya, Al-Shu’ala district, located in western Baghdad.

This initiative is part of the broader Iraq-China oil-for-infrastructure agreement, which aims to improve the country’s healthcare facilities.

The hospital is one of sixteen similar hospitals planned under this agreement, designed to expand healthcare access at the district level and ease pressure on central hospitals in provincial capitals.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the government has already completed eighteen hospitals of various sizes across Iraq.

In addition, eight hospitals are currently under construction, with progress rates ranging between 60 percent and 90 percent.

These developments are part of a focused effort to strengthen the nation’s health infrastructure.

Sudani also mentioned the government’s commitment to launching a national health insurance system as a key component of its development program.

Over the last three years, the capacity of public hospital beds in Iraq has increased from 43,500 to 46,900 beds.

Once all ongoing projects reach completion, this figure is expected to rise to around 60,000 beds.

This expansion aims to make healthcare more accessible throughout the country, especially outside the major urban centers.

To further improve healthcare quality and operational efficiency, Iraq has introduced a joint management system for six hospitals.

This model involves partnerships with leading international medical institutions, ensuring that best practices are followed and that patients receive better medical care.

The Iraq-China deal, estimated to be worth US$50 billion, centers on exchanging oil revenues for infrastructure development.

This arrangement has enabled substantial investments in healthcare, transportation, and energy sectors, contributing to Iraq’s broader reconstruction and modernization plans.

Prime Minister Sudani’s announcement reflects Iraq’s ongoing efforts to rebuild critical infrastructure after years of conflict and economic challenges.

By prioritizing healthcare infrastructure, the government intends to address long-standing issues and improve public services to meet the needs of a growing population.
