KENYA— The Joint Committee on Health, comprising the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health and the Senate Standing Committee on Health, has approved Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth’s appointment as the new Director-General for Health.
In presenting Dr. Amoth’s case, the committees highlighted his extensive knowledge and experience, demonstrated through his satisfactory performance as Acting Director-General for four years.
After thoroughly reviewing his qualifications and competence, the committees recommended his nomination to Parliament, citing compliance with constitutional provisions.
Endebess MP Robert Pukose, Chair of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health, emphasized that Dr. Amoth met all statutory and constitutional requirements for the role.
Pukose, who moved the motion for approval, expressed confidence in Dr. Amoth’s ability to lead effectively.
Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene Ntwiga supported the motion and praised Dr. Amoth for his patience and long-standing service as an acting member.
He expressed optimism that Dr. Amoth’s leadership would bring valuable counsel and advice to the Ministry of Health.
Munene also highlighted Dr. Amoth’s extensive experience, knowledge, and passion for healthcare, which he believes will greatly benefit the country.
Given Dr. Amoth’s respected authority within the Ministry, Munene urged him to guide the new Cabinet Secretary for Health if he were approved.
Additionally, Dadaab MP Farah Maalim voiced his support for Dr. Amoth, stressing the importance of appointing qualified individuals to public positions.
Maalim highlighted that merit-based appointments are crucial for the country’s optimal performance.
He lamented that Kenya often fails to place the right individuals in appropriate roles, hindering national progress.
Dr. Amoth brings over 30 years of experience in health systems management, reproductive health, and public health at community, national, regional, and global levels.
Since January 2020, he has served as the acting Director-General for Health.
During his tenure, he has developed key national and international health policies, including Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage roadmap, the introduction of Pneumococcal vaccines, and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
