JORDAN—The Kingdom Healthcare Project has unveiled its innovative architectural designs for the Kingdom University of Health Sciences and the Kingdom University Hospital.

This complex project, a collaboration of Sidara Collaborative businesses Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners), Perkins and Will International, and Currie and Brown, aims to set new standards in Jordan’s healthcare and education sectors.

The unveiling took place during a special event that provided an in-depth look into this one-of-a-kind public-private partnership, which is notable locally and regionally for its innovative goals and features.

The project aims to create a world-class healthcare system in Jordan and prepare the next generation of medical professionals.

This effort, which began in late 2023 with a large investment of US$400 million, collaborates with two globally famous universities.

These institutions are UCL Medical School, which will help develop the new university and its undergraduate medicine program, and UCLA Health, which will function as a clinical affiliate.

Dr Mahmoud Sarhan, CEO of the Kingdom Healthcare Project, commended the project’s modern design, advanced infrastructure, and cutting-edge equipment.

He emphasised that the project is a strategic investment in Jordan’s future, providing a comprehensive academic health system that would strengthen the country’s education, health, and medical tourism models. Additionally, it is expected to generate more than 5,000 job opportunities.

According to Dr. Sarhan, the Kingdom University of Health Sciences will open in late 2026, with the Kingdom Hospital beginning operations in early 2027.

This timeline will have a substantial impact on medical education and practice, generating physician-scientists and leaders who can undertake creative research and provide high-quality treatment.

The project’s goal is to transform traditional medical practices by incorporating scientific research, development, and clinical trials into diagnosis, intervention, and therapy.

The hospital will provide great services in a variety of medical sectors, utilizing cutting-edge technology and experience from Jordan and around the world while also improving the overall healing environment.

Project Director Khalil Fakhoury, a partner at Dar Al-Handasah in Amman, emphasised the project’s rapid and efficient progress, which is being built strategically amid a pine forest.

The project, which covers more than 110,000 square meters, follows a modern, purpose-built, and environmentally friendly design, acting as both a cultural icon and a hub for sophisticated medical services.

Sidara Collaborative’s Design Director, Jeffrey Brooks, demonstrated the project’s design, emphasizing its seamless connection with the natural topography near the King of Bahrain Forest.

The design is inspired by native Jordanian stone and wildflowers, resulting in an appealing and contextually relevant appearance.

The modular design strategy improves quality while lowering costs and construction time, resulting in a cutting-edge environment for Jordanian healthcare and medical education.

Upon completion, the Kingdom University of Health Sciences will have a student population of 600 and an annual intake of 100.

The Kingdom University Hospital will have 330 beds, 72 outpatient clinics, a separate children’s hospital, and five centers of medical excellence for cardiology, cancer, neurology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics.

In addition, four research centres will focus on genetics, precision medicine, stem cells, bioinformatics, and health systems.

The master design also contains possibilities for future expansion, with the hospital potentially expanding by 50% and the university adding four additional medical colleges.

This development will address future healthcare demands in the region while also providing endless opportunities for Jordanian healthcare advancement.

Once completed, the project will be handed to the Jordan Investment Fund using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) procedure.
