KENYA—Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is making history by performing cochlear implant surgeries for children with hearing impairments.
For the first time, local Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgeons will be working alongside specialists from the Kingdom of Morocco to provide this life-changing procedure.
The surgical mission, lasting from November 3rd to 7th, 2025, aims to treat 50 children, and already eight have received surgery in the hospital’s main operating theatres.
This milestone marks the debut of cochlear implant surgery not only at KNH but also within Kenya’s public healthcare system.
The program highlights KNH’s growing potential as a future Centre of Excellence for hearing care in the region.
The success of this initiative stems from a partnership between First Lady H.E. Mama Rachel Ruto and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Asmaa of Morocco.
Through their joint efforts, cochlear implant devices valued at KSh 120 million (USD 900,000) were donated to support the program.
For the children undergoing surgery, these cochlear implants offer more than the ability to hear; they open doors to new opportunities for communication, education, and social connection.
Likewise, their families experience renewed hope as they witness the positive impact on their children’s quality of life.
The surgical team combines expertise from both countries, ensuring these children receive high-quality care.
This collaboration also strengthens medical ties between Kenya and Morocco, fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building in advanced hearing treatments.
KNH’s commitment to improving hearing care aligns with broader efforts to expand access to specialized health services in Kenya.
By introducing cochlear implants, the hospital is addressing a critical need for children with hearing loss, helping them integrate more fully into society.
Through this week-long effort, 50 children will get a chance to benefit from cutting-edge technology previously unavailable in Kenya’s public hospitals.
Many of these young patients will experience hearing for the very first time, transforming their lives and enhancing their future prospects.
The cochlear implant initiative reflects a growing focus on pediatric healthcare advancements in Kenya.
It demonstrates the power of international cooperation and local expertise to bring innovative treatments to underserved communities.
As the surgical mission progresses, KNH continues to build its reputation as a center where medical breakthroughs occur, providing hope and new possibilities to those in need.
