SAUDI ARABIA— The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully treated a 54-year-old woman who was suffering from severe congestive heart failure and multiple valve diseases.

This remarkable achievement was made possible through a catheter-based procedure, which served as a safer and more innovative alternative to the traditional open-heart surgery that could have posed significant risks given the patient’s critical condition.

The patient’s condition was particularly complex, with severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction coupled with congestive heart failure.

Additionally, she was burdened with significant valve abnormalities, including severe aortic insufficiency, severe mitral stenosis and regurgitation, and pulmonary hypertension.

These complications made daily activities challenging, as the patient experienced difficulty breathing and extreme fatigue.

Given the patient’s critical state, traditional open-heart surgery posed significant risks.

The medical team recognised the potential dangers and opted for a catheter-based procedure, which is a safer and more innovative alternative.

This minimally invasive technique was chosen to minimize surgical risks and complications, particularly given the patient’s previous medical history.

In 2019, she underwent coronary artery bypass surgery and mitral valve repair to address issues stemming from rheumatic heart disease and coronary artery disease.

The catheter-based procedure reduced the risks associated with open-heart surgery and offered a comprehensive solution for simultaneously addressing multiple valve conditions.

Reducing valvular regurgitation significantly improved the patient’s overall well-being, leading to shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

This approach reflects a broader trend in modern medicine, where minimally invasive techniques are increasingly favoured for their ability to deliver effective results with fewer complications.

This medical breakthrough at KFSHRC opens the door to broader applications of catheter-based treatments, offering hope to a wider segment of patients with complex heart conditions.

It also highlights KFSHRC’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of conventional medical practices and consistently seeking innovative solutions to improve patient care and outcomes.
