King Fahd Medical City begins operations of its state-of-the-art proton therapy center in Riyadh

SAUDI ARABIA — A brand-new proton therapy facility within the Comprehensive Cancer Center has officially opened at the King Fahd Medical City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In a media release, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel said: “The Proton Therapy Center is fully prepared to provide precise specialized oncology care for the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Covering an area of 4,000 square meters, the Saudi Proton Therapy Center was constructed at a cost of more than SAR924 million (US$246.35 million).

The first-of-its-kind facility in Saudi Arabia is set to open its doors to patients in a bold move to improve their outcomes and quality of life, targeting to treat about 1,700 patients annually.

This will enable the Ministry of Health to reach its specialized care delivery potential while addressing the evolving healthcare needs across the region.

It comes as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia restructures its health sector under the Health Sector Transformation Program, part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

For his part, Fahad Al-Jalajel stated: “The center will provide precise care for patients with complex oncologic cases, in addition to the advantage that it will reduce the hassle of traveling for many patients who were receiving treatment outside the Kingdom.”

Fahad Al-Jalajel further said that the purpose-built center will provide patients suffering from complex oncologic conditions with integrated care in familiar, comfortable surroundings, particularly close to their families and children.

He explained that the center will not only provide proton therapy services to communities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but also to those outside the region.

He confirmed that it is considered the first and only center for treating tumors using proton beam technology in the Middle East.

Fahad Al-Jalajel mentioned that the state-of-the-art facility at the Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of King Fahd Medical City, which is affiliated with the Riyadh Second Health Cluster.

Notably, King Fahad Medical City is at the vanguard of clinical care in the Middle East, providing world-class diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitation services to communities across the region.

The idea behind King Fahd Medical City is to provide specialized services in tertiary care and quaternary care mainly in neuroscience, cancer, and cardiology.

In addition, King Fahad Medical City boasts rehabilitation services, specialized women´s care, a hospital specialized in children’s complex medical problems, and specialized inter-medicine and surgery unit.

The King Fahad Medical City’s Saudi Proton Therapy Center is reportedly one of the largest projects witnessed by the health sector, and keeps pace with the growth, development, and leadership in the health sector in Saudi Arabia,” outlined Fahad Al-Jalajel.

Aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the opening of the Saudi Proton Therapy Center represents a significant milestone in the development of the region’s healthcare industry.

It is poised to create a lasting impact on qualitative and sustainable initiatives in the health sector for the benefit of the community at all levels.
