SAUDI ARABIA—King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Saudi Arabia has achieved substantial improvements in healthcare efficiency through its innovative Capacity Command Centre, a crucial component of the hospital’s digital transformation initiatives.
Since its launch in September 2021, the Center has played a crucial role in optimizing hospital operations and enhancing patient care by using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics.
The Capacity Command Center provides real-time monitoring of the entire patient journey—from admission to discharge—using a locally developed color-coded alert system.
This system identifies bottlenecks and enables timely interventions, which has streamlined admissions, discharges, and patient transfers.
As a result, patients experience faster recovery times, improved resource utilization, and smoother clinical handovers, all contributing to a better overall patient experience.
Building on this foundation, the Center uses AI and big data to forecast patient volumes and identify pressure points within the hospital.
This predictive capability allows precise allocation of resources, ensuring that the hospital is prepared to meet fluctuating demands.
The Center also conducts continuous technical reporting, data mining, and performance reviews, which translate into ongoing institutional improvements and enhanced operational efficiency.
The impact of these innovations is clear: there has been a 14% reduction in the average length of stay for patients and a 19% decrease in congestion in the emergency department.
These improvements have led to faster patient recovery, increased bed availability, and heightened patient safety.
Meanwhile, overall hospital activity has grown, with new patient admissions rising by 10.3% to 46,476 in 2024, reflecting the Center’s success in managing capacity and throughput effectively.
Since its inception, the Capacity Command Center has executed over 300,000 interventions, dramatically reducing bed waiting times from 32 hours to just 6 hours, and emergency care waiting times by 14%.
Additionally, more than 90% of pharmacy and laboratory services are now delivered within 15 minutes, further enhancing patient satisfaction and care quality.
The Center’s operations are built on four main pillars: predicting healthcare demand, monitoring actual patient flow, overseeing inpatient journeys, and coordinating operating room schedules.
This comprehensive approach ensures that resources are optimally used and that patient care is delivered efficiently across all hospital units.
KFSHRC’s Capacity Command Center exemplifies how AI and real-time analytics can enable predictive, evidence-based decision-making in healthcare.
It supports the hospital’s mission to provide high-quality, specialized care through a scalable, intelligent healthcare model.
The hospital’s efforts have not gone unnoticed; KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for three consecutive years.
It is also recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, and it was included in the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.
