KENYA—The Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is set to collaborate with Siemens Healthineers and Africa Health Business in a strategic effort to combat stroke, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
Representatives from Siemens Healthineers and Africa Health Business unveiled this partnership initiative at the hospital.
KUTRRH’s CEO, Ahmed Dagane, and the Acting Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Kerama Onyimbo, hosted the visiting team, who discussed potential areas of collaboration.
In a meeting chaired by Dr. Onyimbo, Siemens Healthineers highlighted several critical areas for partnership, including introducing advanced medical solutions to tackle stroke, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions.
These cutting-edge technologies are currently available only in Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa, but with this collaboration, KUTRRH aims to be the first hospital in East and Central Africa to offer such advanced healthcare services.
One of the partnership highlights is Siemens Healthineers’ plan to introduce adaptive radiotherapy and artificial intelligence-guided tumour contouring equipment in Kenya.
This breakthrough technology is expected to revolutionise cancer treatment by significantly reducing the time it takes to treat patients.
Additionally, the introduction of a second CT-enabled cath lab and the establishment of a state-of-the-art stroke management center at KUTRRH are also under discussion.
These innovations promise to elevate KUTRRH’s capabilities in providing specialized care for stroke and cardiovascular diseases.
Siemens Healthineers has also expressed interest in supporting the hospital’s research and training efforts to ensure the sustainability and growth of these advanced healthcare services.
Conversely, Africa Health Business is committed to positioning KUTRRH as a centre of excellence for healthcare across the African continent.
Both organisations have pledged to present detailed proposals outlining the partnership’s framework within six weeks, starting mid-September 2024.
This collaboration follows another major milestone for KUTRRH, which recently opened a new Pediatric Oncology Ward.
The inauguration of this state-of-the-art facility is a significant step towards improving cancer care for children in Kenya.
Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health, officiated the event, which marked the national commemoration of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
It brought together various participants, including KUTRRH Chairperson Prof. Olive Mugenda, Ministry of Health officials, healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and families affected by childhood cancer.
