KUTRRH unveils state-of-the-art endoscopy tower to elevate medical services

KENYA—Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has taken a monumental stride forward by introducing its cutting-edge endoscopy tower, a critical addition to the nation’s quaternary public healthcare facilities.

With a commitment to offering essential procedures that were once limited in the country, KUTRRH has partnered with the Kenyan Ministry of Health, Fuji, and Science Scope to procure advanced medical diagnostic tools, solidifying its position as a pioneer in medical innovation.

This formidable leap is exemplified by the acquisition of an advanced endoscopy tower, a collaboration that has birthed the availability of this technology for the greater Kenyan public.

Notably, KUTRRH’s endoscopy tower marks one of only two in Kenya’s public health sector, underlining the hospital’s dedication to elevating medical care accessibility.

This state-of-the-art machinery plays a pivotal role in diagnosing and treating a range of digestive system diseases through procedures such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, and EUS.

The implications of this technology span ailments in the liver, pancreas, gall bladder, and beyond, offering a holistic approach to medical intervention.

Speaking at the tower’s unveiling, Prof. Olive Mugenda, the teaching hospital’s Chairperson, expressed the significance of this achievement: “Today was a special day as I joined Management and Specialist teams at KUTRRH in receiving an advanced Endoscopy Tower Machine.”

Prof. Mugenda highlighted that, unlike the previous standard endoscopy equipment, the advanced machine has the capacity to diagnose and treat approximately five patients a day, due to the intricacy of the treatment procedures.

This landmark achievement, powered by the collaboration between KUTRRH and the Kenyan Ministry of Health, reflects the institution’s commitment to bolstering the government’s efforts in achieving Universal Health Care goals.

Prof. Mugenda specifically extended gratitude to the team of experts led by Dr. Olivia Kyeni, Dr. Miriam Gatehi, and Dr. Ernest Siwo, who played a pivotal role in making this advancement possible.

A significant boon for the public, the advanced endoscopy services that often command a price tag of up to US$5,500 in major private hospitals will now be accessible at KUTRRH at a fraction of the cost, under US$700, covered by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

This groundbreaking endoscopy tower is equipped to perform a spectrum of critical procedures, including upper endoscopy (OGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), consolidating KUTRRH’s role as a cutting-edge medical institution.

Positioned as a pivotal player in Kenya’s healthcare landscape, KUTRRH stands tall as a leading Public National Referral Hospital (Level 6), boasting a 650-bed facility brimming with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

The institution’s commitment to staying at the forefront of healthcare advancements through research, innovation, training, and partnerships is evident in its unwavering dedication to addressing current health challenges and proactively preparing for future health scenarios.

Through the introduction of this advanced technology, KUTRRH takes a giant stride towards achieving its mission of enhancing the health and well-being of both Kenyan citizens and global communities by providing patient-centered and evidence-based healthcare.

This leap aligns perfectly with KUTRRH’s overarching ethos of delivering exceptional care, enhancing patient outcomes, and fostering job satisfaction among healthcare providers, all while catering to specialized needs through highly skilled consultants and specialized units.
