LEBANON – The Department of Cardiology at LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital has concluded an advanced cardiac training course for a group of healthcare professionals from the Republic of Iraq.

Led by the Head of the Center’s Cardiology Division, Dr. Georges Ghanem, the training session on Swan-Ganz catheterization brought together cardiologists and interventionalists, along with their technical team.

The training focused on providing hands-on experience to the delegation from Iraq seeking to enhance their skills in right heart catheterisation (RHC) procedures.

In a press release, LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital said: “We will keep on organizing new training sessions at the simulation lab, covering various topics such as complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and Structural heart diseases, with a focus on hands-on experience.”

LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital offered a high-quality environment for a hands-on training approach for the skills development of cardiologists, interventionalists, and their technical teams from Iraq.

This decision aligns with its strategic objective as a university medical center to provide comprehensive educational opportunities for healthcare professionals.

It comes shortly after the Dermatology Department at LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital began rolling out a new initiative in concerted efforts to assist survivors of the Beirut blast.

LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital remains committed to advancing medical knowledge and fostering collaboration in the field of cardiology.

Consequently, the Department of Cardiology at LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital provided each team member with a copy of the training material to aid in further retention, learning, and education.

This valuable resource will allow participants to review and reinforce their understanding of Swan-Ganz catheterization and related topics.

In the first session of the cardiology training, the Iraqi medical professionals engaged in a comprehensive lecture on key procedure details on right heart catheterisation.

The initial session covered all relevant parts of the diagnostic heart procedure, including indications, contraindications, technical aspects of the procedure, and analysis of different waveforms.

On the theory training workshop, LAU Medical Center- Rizk Hospital stated: “Participants were able to review the indications, technique, and measurement parameters of right heart catheterization.”

Attendees were able to gain a deep understanding of the theory behind Swan-Ganz catheterization, setting the stage for the practical sessions that followed.

Participants were then taken to the innovative and advanced hybrid Operating Room at LAU Medical Center – Rizk Hospital.

Inside the Hybrid OR, the delegation from Iraq witnessed live demonstrations of right heart catheterization in three different cases.

The training session covered all aspects of Swan-Ganz catheterization, from equipment preparation to waveform analysis and obtaining hemodynamic parameters.

It involved a more personalized, hands-on experience for each participant to enhance their skills in Swan-Ganz catheterization.

The program put a special emphasis on the importance of this type of pulmonary artery catheterization procedure in valvular heart diseases, demonstrating its relevance in clinical practice.

Additionally, the training session explored new imaging technologies in coronary angiography, including the use of quantitative flow ratio (QFR) and its role in decision-making for angioplasty in intermediate coronary lesions.

The comprehensive approach equipped the participants with a wide range of skills and knowledge in the field of cardiac catheterisation and coronary angiography.

Overall, the training session presented an ideal chance for each team member to not only master the manipulation aspect and the general rules for handling the Swan-Ganz catheter but to also interpret the results obtained from the procedure.
