M42’s Healthpoint expands plastic surgery services for lipedema, lymphedema

UAE—Healthpoint, a member of the M42 group in the United Arab Emirates, has expanded its plastic and reconstructive surgery services to address complex chronic conditions such as lipedema and lymphedema.

These disorders involve abnormal fat or fluid accumulation, leading to persistent and often painful swelling.

Healthpoint’s enhanced services integrate advanced diagnostics with innovative treatments, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge technology to provide personalized patient care.

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is compromised, preventing proper drainage of lymph fluid.

This condition can be classified as primary, which is inherited genetically, or secondary, arising from factors such as lymph node removal, radiation therapy, injuries, or severe obesity.

Lymphedema is particularly common among breast cancer patients who have undergone procedures involving lymph node removal or radiation, with studies indicating that about 20% of these patients are at risk of developing lymphedema following surgery.

On the other hand, lipedema is characterized by abnormal fat distribution, primarily in the lower body, and is associated with genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, or obesity.

This condition predominantly affects women, with estimates from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggesting that nearly 11% of adult women worldwide suffer from lipedema.

At Healthpoint, the medical team evaluates lymphedema by assessing the extent of lymphatic fluid retention and tissue damage, identifying blockages within the lymphatic system to create tailored treatment plans.

These plans may include non-surgical conservative approaches or surgical interventions that reroute lymphatic fluid by connecting lymph vessels to veins, effectively bypassing obstructions or re-implanting lymph nodes.

In severe cases of lymphedema, specialized liposuction techniques are used to remove excess tissue without harming the remaining lymphatic vessels.
