KENYA – The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ruai Family Hospital (RFH), Maxwell Okoth, has stepped down from the management after serving for 10 years.
In an internal memo, Okoth said he will continue serving in an acting capacity until the board selects the new CEO.
“I will be stepping back from the day-to-day operations as CEO. Ruai Family Hospital is in my DNA and will continue to benefit from the experience I have in my new oversight role,” said Okoth.
“I will continue to undertake my duties as CEO as we handle this transition over the next couple of weeks. The Board will be announcing the new CEO very soon.”
The CEO thanked the team of management and the board led by chair Edward Odundo for ensuring patients’ needs are met.
“I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to our team for their hard work, dedication, and compassion. I also thank our current board of directors, led by our chair, Dr Edward Odundo for building strong corporate governance,” he said.
He narrated the story of the hospital, from a one-bedroom apartment single clinic to nine hospitals with over 600 employees.
The hospital served over 450,000 patients, making over 7,000 safe deliveries for mothers under Okoth’s leadership.
Okoth revealed that the hospital is set to complete new ventures including the multispeciality wing of the Cancer (Oncology) centre and Cardiac Centre in 2023.
“Ruai Family Hospital has taken off and the story can only get better. We hope to finalize our multispeciality wing of Cancer (Oncology) centre and Cardiac Centre in this calendar year 2023,” he added.
Maxwell started Ruai Family Hospital at the age of 26 just after he left medical school. He had a seed capital of Sh300,000 from his mother and wife.
Over time, he has overseen the growth and expansion of the business to five hospitals that includes a 50-bed facility in Ruai, a 10-bed maternity hospital in Tala, a 24-hour outpatient facility in Embakasi, an outpatient facility in Jacaranda Gardens and a 100-bed multi-specialty hospital in Ruai.
The chain currently attends to about 500 patients a day and he has plans of expanding across the country and eventually East Africa.
Besides his private practice, he has worked in the public health sector, spearheading the upgrade of Mutuini Dispensary in Nairobi to a Level 4 hospital.
Maxwell has Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi and has just been admitted at IESE Business School for the Global CEO Programme. His biggest dream is to make healthcare accessible and affordable across the continent.
