SWITZERLAND— Medacta Group SA has achieved a significant milestone in the United States by completing the first anatomic shoulder surgeries using its NextAR Augmented Reality Surgical Application alongside the Medacta Shoulder System (MSS).
The NextAR Shoulder application incorporates a proprietary tracking system that offers real-time guidance for surgical instruments, ensuring precise implant placement.
This technology is further enhanced by user-friendly software that simplifies the surgical process and optimizes outcomes.
As part of the NextAR Augmented Reality Surgical Platform, it complements existing applications such as NextAR Knee and NextAR Spine, providing a unified solution for joint replacement and spine surgeries.
The NextAR Shoulder is also integrated into Medacta’s MySolutions Personalized Ecosystem, a suite of advanced digital tools designed to enhance patient care and improve surgical precision.
John-Erik Bell, MD, from Dartmouth Health System, praised the NextAR platform as a groundbreaking innovation that has transformed his approach to reverse shoulder replacement surgeries.
With the addition of the anatomic shoulder application, Dr. Bell expressed his enthusiasm for leveraging this technology to refine glenoid component positioning in terms of retroversion, inclination, backside contact, and rotation.
He highlighted how the platform minimizes risks, such as peg perforation, and emphasized, “NextAR navigation allows me to execute my preoperative plan with precision and confidence.”
This advancement completes Medacta’s NextAR Shoulder platform, equipping surgeons with a cutting-edge tool for a wide range of shoulder replacement procedures.
In a recent study by Rojas JT, Jost B, Zipeto C, Budassi P, and Zumstein MA, the NextAR Shoulder demonstrated exceptional accuracy, with minimal deviations between preoperative plans and postoperative results.
Mark Fitzgerald, MD, of Peak Orthopedics in Denver, also praised the platform, calling it a cost-effective solution that improves surgical accuracy and consistency without increasing operating room time.
He noted that the technology has become the standard of care in his practice.
Supported by Medacta’s M.O.R.E. Institute, the NextAR Shoulder benefits from comprehensive education and training from an international network of expert surgeons.
This ensures that surgeons have access to personalised learning pathways and high-level support, reinforcing Medacta’s commitment to advancing surgical excellence.
Medacta’s NextAR platform, combining augmented reality with precision technology, continues to set new benchmarks in patient care and surgical innovation.
