Medanta expands to North East India with Guwahati Super Specialty Hospital

The new facility is planned to house 400 beds and will provide comprehensive care across more than 20 super specialties, including organ transplants and advanced robotic procedures.

INDIA—India’s leading private healthcare group, Global Health Limited, known for its Medanta hospitals, has announced a significant expansion into the North East by establishing a state-of-the-art super specialty hospital in Guwahati.

This move marks Medanta’s first foray into the region, aiming to bridge the gap in advanced healthcare services for millions of residents across Assam and its neighboring states.

The company’s board of directors has approved the purchase of three acres of land from Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd. for ₹30 crore (US$3.6 million), plus additional expenses related to registration and possession of the land.

Furthermore, Medanta is set to invest a total of around ₹500 crore (US$60 million USD) in the project, which includes the cost of land acquisition and the development of the hospital itself.

Strategically located on National Highway 27, the proposed hospital site offers excellent connectivity, making it accessible to people from across the North East.

The new facility is planned to house 400 beds and will provide comprehensive care across more than 20 super specialties, including organ transplants and advanced robotic procedures.

This expansion is expected to directly benefit over 50 million people throughout the region, significantly strengthening the existing healthcare infrastructure.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta, emphasized the transformative nature of this initiative.

He highlighted that the North East has long been underserved in terms of quality healthcare, and the new hospital in Guwahati represents a decisive step towards addressing this need.

According to Dr. Trehan, the project aligns with Medanta’s mission to make world-class healthcare accessible to all, regardless of location.

He stated that this development marks the beginning of a journey to bring advanced medical care closer to millions in Assam and neighboring states.

Adding to this, Pankaj Sahni, Group CEO of Medanta, pointed out that Guwahati, often referred to as the gateway to the North East, is ideally positioned to serve the diverse population of the region.

He expressed confidence that the new hospital would help bridge the significant gap in access to high-quality medical services, bringing advanced, high-end care within easy reach of millions who have historically been underserved.

This Guwahati project is part of Medanta’s broader strategy to expand its national footprint and deliver world-class healthcare to emerging and underserved markets.

With this addition, Medanta’s network will grow to seven hospitals, including its existing facilities in Gurugram, Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow, and Patna, as well as a hospital currently under construction in Noida.
