KENYA — The State Department of Public Health & Professional Standards in Kenya has launched an extensive review of facilities offering invasive cosmetic procedures to ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
This review comes shortly after a tragic incident involving the death of Ms Lucy Wambui during cosmetic surgery at Omnicare, also known as Body by Design.
In a statement issued by Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki, the Ministry of Health emphasized the urgency of the matter.
The Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority, along with other regulatory bodies, will lead the inspections to ensure that all cosmetic surgery and wellness centers comply with the required safety protocols.
The inspection aims to protect public health, maintain professional ethics, and ensure the quality of services within the medical and wellness sectors.
The Ministry of Health reassured the public of its commitment to providing safe, high-quality healthcare services across the country.
As part of this review, authorities have identified 126 beauty and medical spas and 34 plastic surgery centers located in Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Mombasa.
These facilities will undergo thorough inspections to ensure they are maintaining ethical practices and are staffed by properly trained professionals.
During these inspections, any facility found to be in violation of safety standards will face severe consequences, which could include closure and legal action.
The Ministry’s actions signal a strong commitment to holding service providers accountable for upholding safety standards.
It is a clear indication that cosmetic procedures must be performed in a safe and professional manner to protect the public.
Additionally, the Ministry reminded healthcare providers to strictly follow regulations, prioritize patient safety, and maintain high ethical standards.
The Ministry also advised public caution, urging individuals to seek services only from licensed and certified professionals and facilities. This is essential to minimize the risks associated with unregulated or unsafe practices.
The State Department has also pledged to continue its efforts in monitoring healthcare facilities across the nation. Regular enforcement of regulations and adherence to standards will be a top priority in order to safeguard the health and well-being of Kenyans.
