NIGERIA— The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with eGate Technology, MilkyWay Technologies, and GS Technology to deploy its technologies to digitalize and transform Nigerian healthcare and agriculture.

The deal will involve the implementation of eGate’s AI platform to digitally transform healthcare and agriculture services using AI, Biometric Digital Identity & payment smart cards, Electronic medical records (EMR), Hospital Management, Telemedicine, and Training & Simulation platforms.

The signing of the MoU was with the Director General of the NASRDA, Mr Essam El Saghir, eGate Technology Chairman, MilkWay Limited CEO Dr. Olugbenga Leke Oyewole, and the MD of GS Technology Mr. Gaseer Elsayed.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NASRDA DG, Ahmad said the partnership would improve and streamline access to services and enhance efficiency.

The Director General said, This agreement will support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of healthcare and agriculture services offered by enabling the digital transformation using the latest AI technology to streamline the sector operations to increase efficiency that aligns with international standards.

Ahmad added that digitalization would have a revolutionary impact on unifying a secured biometric digital identity smart card for every citizen with a payment facility.

Per the deal, eGate’s solution will provide biometric smart payment cards which will be integrated with existing payment facilities to facilitate payments for citizens.

It will ease the process of application for loans or purchases of farm inputs such as fertilizers, while also making it possible for people to undertake medical consultations remotely.

The system will be a fully integrated digital identity smart card system that will create a biometric digital identity to identify citizens and their electronic profiles with the financial facilities to receive money or do any type of payment.

According to the MD MilkyWay Limited, Dr. Oyewole, the signing of the agreement as a milestone and an achievement will contribute immensely to advancing crucial aspects within the healthcare and agricultural sectors of the country.

The partners added that the new system will increase efficiency, ease access to services, and reduce problems like misidentification and fraud.

Elsayed, founder of GS Group said that the organization was honored to be selected to implement their state-of-the-art RFID technology and intelligent traffic management system with country footprint infrastructure that poses many critical challenges in most modern cities, including congestion, traffic violations, car theft, and illegal vehicles.

These digital transformation initiatives come as the government says there is progress in enrolment for the national digital ID program.

Figures from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) indicate that 634,603 enrollments were recorded in July, which is a drop from the one million monthly registrations in the past several months.

Furthermore, the number of those with the National Identification Number (NIN) has now reached 101.64 million.

Digitizing healthcare in Nigeria through private-public partnerships

The new partnership will ensure that telemedicine will play a crucial role in extending healthcare services to remote regions by utilizing electronic information and technology.

This includes using computers, cameras, videoconferencing, satellites, wireless communications, and the Internet for distant healthcare delivery.

Furthermore, the healthcare simulation platform will serve as a valuable tool for educating and training healthcare professionals and students, enabling them to acquire essential skills.

The digital-based AI technology can be used to effectively manage and maintain a unified digital identity for every citizen, with includes EMR in one smart card that can be used for payments and to receive payment or support any activities within the country.

It will guarantee effective monitoring of prescriptions, emergency room, drug control, appointments, and services.

The telemedicine project uses EMR technology to establish a data bank of medical records for Nigerians.

This will safeguard accessibility regardless of their location within the country, ultimately improving healthcare and fostering a culture of wellness among Nigerians.
