TANZANIA – Amref Health Africa and Tanzania’s Ministry of Health have announced plans to inaugurate a new maternal, child and reproductive health initiative dubbed ‘Uzazi ni Maisha Wogging Campaign’ scheduled to take place in Zanzibar at the Sheikh Amani Stadium on 27th August 2022.
The Uzazi ni Maisha Campaign under the theme “Support Medical Equipment and Supplies for Safe Delivery” seeks to create awareness of the gap within the health sector as well as raise funds to support government initiatives in the provision of medical equipment and supplies for safe delivery in Zanzibar.
According to the Health Management Information Systems statistics in 2017, there is an estimated mortality of 267 deaths out of surviving 100,000 births affecting mothers and an average of 28 deaths out of every surviving 1,000 children.
The maternal health project set to be launched in Zanzibar seeks to address challenges to mother and child health service provision within the country’s institutions which lead to recorded high mortality rates resulting from inadequate medical equipment, supplies and personnel.
Amref Health Africa in Tanzania’s projects responds to national health priorities and sustainable development goals (SDGs) in addressing the needs of needy communities mostly women and children.
Zanzibar’s Minister for Health Hon Nassor Ahmed Mazrui noted that a total of 28 health institutions will directly benefit from the health campaign and have medical equipment delivered as a result of proceeds from the campaign to bridge gaps in maternal health and child delivery services in Zanzibar.
In addition, Amref Health Africa Tanzania will hold subsequent maternal and child health campaigns annually both in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar with an aim to achieve a massive milestone within three years of holding the Uzazi ni Maisha Campaign consistently.
Amref Health Africa has been among the major supporters of the Government of Tanzania’s health care initiatives particularly the Ministry of Health, and President Office Region Authority and Local Government.
Amref’s projects are categorized into four main thematic areas namely Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH), Disease Control and Prevention (DCP) program, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Capacity Building Program.
Additionally, Amref Health Africa in Tanzania aims to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of health services by strengthening health systems, improving access to services, advocating stronger community health systems and influencing health policies.
Country Director of Amref Health Africa Tanzania Dr. Florence Temu further called upon well-wishers, organizations and the general Tanzanian public to join the worthy cause through contributions and donations, adding that organizations can sponsor participants and events as a whole.
Moreover, Amref Health Africa Tanzania will continue working closely with both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar to support the governments by bridging the available gaps in multiple key aspects covering women, children, adolescents and health works targeted at improving health outcomes.
