Oman International Hospital pioneers new treatment for keratoconus

OMAN—Oman International Hospital has reported the successful implementation of Corneal Allogeneic Intrastromal Ring Implants (CAIRS), an innovative new surgical treatment intended exclusively to treat keratoconus.

The newly developed medication represents enormous progress in ophthalmology, providing patients with new hope for this severe corneal condition.

The CAIRS treatment uses a femtosecond laser to introduce a specialized ring formed of donor corneal tissue into the patient’s cornea.

This minimally invasive approach seeks to enhance corneal shape and vision quality, offering an option for more invasive operations like corneal transplants.

CAIRS has shown a better long-term safety profile than artificial ring implants, lowering the likelihood of problems and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Maskari, Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Cataract, Cornea, and Refractive Surgeon at Oman Vision Centre, led the team that completed the first successful treatments.

Dr. Al-Maskari highlighted his excitement about providing this innovative treatment to patients, stating that Corneal Allogeneic Intrastromal Ring Implants are a successful solution with shorter recovery times and lower risks than older procedures.

He emphasized that this advance is an important step forward in their mission to provide cutting-edge eye care in Oman.

Mr Marcelo Pereira, CEO of Oman International Hospital, further stated that implementing this technique is consistent with the hospital’s dedication to excellence and innovation in healthcare.

He noted that, as one of the region’s premier medical institutions, the hospital constantly strives to integrate cutting-edge technology and treatments to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Early patient outcomes have proven extremely encouraging, with considerable improvements in vision. As a result, individuals have responded positively to the operation, and it is expected to become a standard treatment for those suffering from keratoconus.

Oman International Hospital is a premier healthcare facility committed to providing superior medical treatment to the community.

The hospital aspires to provide high-quality medical services by utilizing cutting-edge facilities, a talented team of healthcare professionals, and a dedication to patient well-being.
