INDIA – Orbis and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have expanded their collaboration agreement to launch the Eye Care Manual on Mapping of Human Resource and Infrastructure for Pediatric Eye Care Services in India.

It provides information about Eye Care Indicators such as Eye Institute Population Ratio, Ophthalmologist Population Ratio, Optometrist Population Ratio, Paediatric Eye Institute Population Ratio, and Paediatric Ophthalmologist Population Ratio.

Mitigating childhood blindness requires assessing and bridging the gap in service delivery through mapping of resources and infrastructure followed by informed decision making,” Dr. Jeevan Singh Titiyal, Chief of Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, said in a press release.

This strategic move will help to address the growing concern around the availability of manpower and infrastructure in the eye healthcare industry in the country.

In 2020, Dr. R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, New Delhi partnered with National Control for Prevention of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), Orbis, Vision 2020, and All-India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) to transform the field of pediatric eye health in India.

The All-India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) provided the database of ophthalmologists to find the names and contact details of ophthalmologists in the districts in line with the terms of the agreement.

Through the collaboration, a mapping survey collected data involving state programme officers, district programme managers of the NPCB&VI, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government institutes, medical colleges, and private practitioners.

The nationwide mapping of the ‘Human Resources and Infrastructure on Eye Health in India’ survey aimed to develop authentic data regarding the availability of infrastructure facilities, manpower, and speciality services for eye care in the country.

This survey christened as the ‘India Vision Atlas’ under the National Program for the Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, showed gaps in pediatric eye care.

Following the nationwide survey, Dr. R.P. Centre, AIIMS and Orbis have launched a comprehensive manual to provide data regarding the availability of services as well as infrastructure for pediatric eye care services in India.

This publication in collaboration with Dr. R.P. Centre provides an in-depth analysis and insight on trends of pediatric eye care services across different geographies in India,” stated Dr. Rishi Raj Borah, Country Director of Orbis.

The Manual on Mapping of Human Resource and Infrastructure for Pediatric Eye Care Services in India highlights the status of paediatric eye care services in India and provides a detailed insight into related infrastructure.

This manual is an effort towards providing evidence-based information to strengthen the training needs for pediatric eye care services in the country,” underscored Dr. Praveen Vashist, Professor and Officer In-charge of Community Ophthalmology at Dr. R. P. Centre, AIIMS.
