GHANA—President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated four newly constructed 40-bed district hospitals in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
These hospitals are located in Drobonso (Sekyere Afram Plains District), Sabronum (Ahafo Ano South East District), Twedie (Atwima Kwanwoma District), and Suame (Suame Municipal Area).
A fifth hospital, situated in Manso Nkwanta in the Amansie West District, is also completed and will be commissioned soon.
These hospitals are part of a broader initiative launched in 2020, when Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu laid the foundation for the construction of 12 district hospitals in the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions and a polyclinic at Mim in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The project was executed by VAMED Engineering GmbH, an Austrian firm, and extended to other areas, including Jumapo, Kwabeng, Nkwatia, Achiase, Adukrom, Mim, and Kpone Katamanso.
The €71.5 million (US$74.96 million) project was supported by Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s to build and equip 40-bed hospitals.
This funding package also includes 12 two-bedroom semi-detached homes for healthcare staff in each area.
Aside from residential accommodations for hospital staff, the hospitals have an outpatient department with the necessary consulting rooms, a public health department with a 36-seater waiting room, three antenatal consulting rooms, a counselling room, and two offices for public health officers.
It also has a theatre with one surgical suite, an 8-bed paediatric ward, an 8-bed male ward, an 8-bed female ward, four labour delivery stations, an 8-bed maternity ward, a 4-bed lying-in area, and a 2-bed recovery room.
Speaking at the commissioning, President Akufo-Addo urged staff and local communities to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure to improve the well-being of all Ghanaians.
